This librarian blogged about all the notes left in books. They seemed unsolvable puzzles — until one note writer surfaced
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 A decade’s worth of love notes, photographs, scribbled lists and other ephemera left behind in the pages of books returned to the Oakland Public Library have been carefully curated for an exhibition opening this week. Over the past 10 years, librarian Sharon McKeller has collected and digitally archived the items, which provide a tiny window into the lives of those who left them behind — sometimes routine, but sometimes funny, charming, poignant or downright baffling. McKeller has blogged about the items on the Oakland Public Library’s website for years, but it wasn’t until November of last year, when the agency launched a new website, that she was able to neatly categorize the collection for people to browse through online. There you’ll find love letters, birthday cards, to-do lists, recipes, children’s drawings and family photos. Starting Wednesday , people can … [Read more...] about This librarian blogged about all the notes left in books. They seemed unsolvable puzzles — until one note writer surfaced
Taiwan scrambles fighter jets as China deploys 36 warplanes to buzz island
TAIWAN has scrambled fighter jets to protect its territory after China deployed more than 30 warplanes to buzz the island. Dramatic video shared by Chinese state TV shows missiles being launched and jets mid-flight as part of joint military operations in the waters surrounding Taiwan . For its part, Taiwan's Ministry of Defence has shared its own footage of military exercises, including the second day of live-fire artillery drills in Pingtung, the southernmost province on the island. The defence ministry claimed that 10 Chinese warships and 36 military aircraft had been detected around Taiwan on Wednesday. In response, the ministry said it was monitoring the situation and deploying its own naval vessels, aircraft, and land-based missile systems. Earlier on Wednesday, sources claimed Chinese naval ships were active off both the east and west coasts of Taiwan, while fighter jets were also flying close to the halfway point of the Taiwanese straight. Cops broke rule by not citing Filipina who flashed ‘White Privilege Card’
Mimi Israelah, a Trump supporter posted, “When I saw my White Privilege card, I gave to him if it’s ok,” she wrote. “He laughed and called his partner. It’s their first time to see a White Privileged (sic) card.” FACEBOOK ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Two Anchorage police officers violated department policy during a traffic stop last month when a woman Trump supporter showed them a “white privilege card” instead of a driver’s license and was not ticketed. But the police department is treating it as a confidential personnel matter, and it’s not clear what policy was violated or what disciplinary actions the two officers faced, if any, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Mimi Israelah, who describes herself as a Filipina, said in a Facebook post that she was pulled over for weaving at 3:43 a.m. on July 9 in Anchorage after arriving on an early-morning flight from California for a Trump rally. She couldn’t find her driver’s license, she wrote on Facebook in a now-deleted post. “When I … [Read more...] about Cops broke rule by not citing Filipina who flashed ‘White Privilege Card’
China appears to wind down threatening wargames near Taiwan
BEIJING (AP) — China on Wednesday repeated military threats against Taiwan while appearing to wind down wargames near the self-governing island it claims as its own territory that have raised tensions between the two sides to their highest level in years. The message in a lengthy policy statement issued by the Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office and its news department followed almost a week of missile firings and incursions into Taiwanese waters and airspace by Chinese warships and air force planes. The actions disrupted flights and shipping in a region crucial to global supply chains, prompting strong condemnation from the U.S., Japan and others. An English-language version of the Chinese statement said Beijing would “work with the greatest sincerity and exert our utmost efforts to achieve peaceful reunification.” “But we will not renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all necessary measures. This is to guard against external interference and all … [Read more...] about China appears to wind down threatening wargames near Taiwan
More than a dozen companies developing single standard to detect cyberattacks faster
Washington (CNN Business) More than a dozen companies in the cybersecurity space are developing a single, open standard for sharing data about hacking threats, a project the companies say could help organizations detect cyberattacks more quickly. The initiative led by Amazon ( AMZN ) , Cloudflare, Crowdstrike, IBM ( IBM ) , Okta and Salesforce ( CRM ) , among others, aims to solve a critical bottleneck in the sharing of threat information: The different data formats currently in use across multiple cybersecurity tools and products. According to the companies, that mismatch can cause delays in understanding how a cyberattack may be unfolding because data from one tool often must be converted into a compatible format to work with another tool. That can hinder analysis of the underlying threat data, said Mark Ryland, a top cybersecurity executive at Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud computing arm. "Having a holistic view of … [Read more...] about More than a dozen companies developing single standard to detect cyberattacks faster

Rob Bonta calls himself ‘the people’s attorney,’ not the ‘top cop’ — and that’s a big change
Kamala Harris used to refer to herself as California’s “top cop” when she was the state’s attorney general. The current, more progressive Attorney General Rob Bonta prefers a different framing: He calls himself “the people’s attorney.” He looks at his job as being the protector of the little person — or as Bonta describes it in his rapid patter, “our most vulnerable, voiceless, hurt, harmed, abused, mistreated, cast aside, forgotten.” But some of that framing — and the issues Bonta supports, such as tougher oversight of the police — will be fodder for his conservative opponents. Bonta was appointed to the job by Gov. Gavin Newsom in March after President Biden tapped previous Attorney General Xavier Becerra to join the administration as head of Health and Human Services. He faces an election in November 2022 to win the office in his own right. Rivals are already raising big money against him for next year’s race and seeking to cast him as a clone of two progressive district … [Read more...] about Rob Bonta calls himself ‘the people’s attorney,’ not the ‘top cop’ — and that’s a big change
