Coughs that last a long time this winter may be the result of people picking up one infection after another, a GP expert has said. Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, said doctors have noticed that the current round of respiratory infections seems to be lasting longer than usual. She said figures from the College's research and surveillance centre show that rates of lower and upper respiratory tract infections are well above the average usually seen so far in winter. This is echoed in weekly data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which has found high rates of flu and other respiratory viruses. Prof Hawthorne said: "It's not clear why some of the current respiratory infections going around do seem to be lasting longer than usual - this has been noticed by doctors as well as patients, but we are not entirely sure why this is happening. Located on Taiwan’s southwestern coast, Tainan, the island’s oldest city and former capital, has a long history of cultural incursion, much of which can be traced through its existing architecture. Dutch traders started building forts here in the early 1600s, and Ming and Qing loyalists seized control about half a century later. From 1895 to 1945, while the island was under Japanese rule, city planners upgraded Tainan’s municipal grid with new roads, European-style shop houses and an imposing government hall with a mansard roof. Today, relics of the past can be found all over town, sharing space with the street food vendors and restaurants that have made Tainan the … [Read more...] about Chefs and Bartenders Are Injecting New Life Into Taiwan’s Oldest City
Trump’s Killing Spree: The Inside Story of His Race to Execute Every Prisoner He Could
Click here to read the full article. In the final moments of Brandon Bernard’s life, before he was executed by lethal injection at a federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Dec. 10, 2020, President Donald Trump picked up the phone to entertain a final plea for mercy on Bernard’s behalf. The call was not with Bernard’s family or his attorneys. Nor was it with representatives from the Justice Department’s Pardon Attorney office, who had recommended just days earlier that Trump spare Bernard’s life. Rather, the call was with Jamal Fincher Jones, better known as Polow da Don , a music producer responsible for hits like Ludacris ’ “Pimpin’ All Over the World” and Nicki Minaj ’s “Anaconda.” Jones didn’t know Bernard, but he had publicly endorsed Trump for reelection — and that, Bernard’s advocates had correctly suspected, gave him the best chance of getting the president’s ear. The Man Who May Challenge Putin for Power
President Vladimir Putin of Russia, it seems, has finally noticed that the war in Ukraine created a dangerous competitor to his power: Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the private military company, the Wagner group, whose troops fight alongside the Russian Army. Depending on your point of view, Mr. Prigozhin could be considered either the person of the year or the villain of the year. Mr. Putin is, according to many sources in Moscow, confident that he can weaken Mr. Prigozhin, who has clashed with the military’s general staff. However, the effect could be the opposite, with more people seeing Mr. Prigozhin as the most probable favorite to succeed Mr. Putin. From the very beginning of the war against Ukraine, Mr. Putin made sure that rivals to his power could not emerge and took great pains to ensure that the conflict does not create a popular military leader who could pose a threat. It worked. In the summer of 2022, for instance, the ambitious Gen. Alexander Lapin was the … [Read more...] about The Man Who May Challenge Putin for Power
