Chicago Cubs closer David Robertson knows what awaits the next four weeks. Robertson, in his 14th big-league season, has been on the move ahead of the trade deadline once before and has seen plenty of teammates come and go during this month throughout the years. With the Aug. 2 trade deadline a month away, the Cubs will again be sellers. Robertson, who does not have trade protections in his contract, is expected to be on the move. “That’s the way it goes,” Robertson told the Tribune this week. “You never know how many people you’re going to run through in a season. The trade stuff is above my pay grade. It’s uncontrollable for me. So, I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything yet.” Robertson likely won’t be the only Cub jettisoned by Aug. 2. The clubhouse will look different four weeks from now, a familiar position after one-third of the 2021 opening day roster was dealt before last year’s trade deadline. Trade talks will heat up in the coming weeks. With that in mind, here’s … [Read more...] about Which Chicago Cubs players are likely to get traded? Bill Madden: As Yankees-Astros appear headed toward inevitable October clash, MLB’s competitive balance again in the spotlight
We have arrived at the traditional July 4 juncture of the baseball season and besides the Yankees being off to their best start in history and the potential for 4-5 epically bad teams, one other thing has become patently clear: Houston, you’re creating a problem. As the Yankees were running roughshod through one of softest schedules in baseball, including series against two teams, the A’s and Royals on target to lose 100 games, and two others, the Tigers and Cubs, not far behind them, it evoked grand dreams of the first World Series at Yankee Stadium since 2009. Similarly, the Mets, off to third fastest start in their history, have their fans thinking World Series as well for the first time in a while. Hell, maybe even a Subway Series with the Yankees! How cool would that be? And then, beginning on June 21 and extending to the end of the month, they both ran smack dab into Dusty Baker’s unheralded but quite formidable Houston Astros and went a combined 2-7. Although the Yankees … [Read more...] about Bill Madden: As Yankees-Astros appear headed toward inevitable October clash, MLB’s competitive balance again in the spotlight

Keith Hernandez never wanted to come to New York and now he’s forever a Met: ‘Best thing that ever happened to me’
The man who could anticipate everything on the baseball diamond swears he didn’t see this coming. In fact, he thought it might never happen at all. Keith Hernandez was caught completely by surprise when the Mets announced that they would be retiring his number. The ceremony, set for July 9 at Citi Field, is a long overdue recognition for one of the team’s best players. For as long as there are the New York Mets, there will be a No. 17 plaque on display, making Hernandez immortal in a place he never wanted to be in the first place. “There was no excitement for coming to New York, because they were a last place team,” Hernandez says. Speaking over the phone from his backyard in California, Hernandez recalls the day in 1983 when he was traded from the Cardinals to the Mets. “It was a very sad day for me,” he admits. “I was a Cardinals fan as a kid. I came up in the ‘70s when New York was going bankrupt. It was kind of a dangerous town. I didn’t go out when we’d visit, I’d stay … [Read more...] about Keith Hernandez never wanted to come to New York and now he’s forever a Met: ‘Best thing that ever happened to me’

Vladimir Putin’s evil plan exposed as Russia loses ‘floating missile base’ Snake Island
Ukraine's recapture of Snake Island is a major blow to Vladimir Putin who was using the strategic outpost as part of his evil plan to spark global hunger and destabilise the EU, an expert has said. Yesterday Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed its troops have abandoned the Black Sea island, claiming they left as a gesture of goodwill. But Ukrainian officials say Putin's troops were driven off in five boats after a trouncing defeat at the hand of Kyiv's forces. The island - which was captured on the first day of Russia's invasion - achieved worldwide fame when a Russian warship's demand for inhabitants to surrender was met with a resounding "go f**k yourself" from 13 valiant border guards who were then slaughtered in an aerial bombardment. The tiny outpost lies close to the coasts of Ukraine and Romania and is strategically important because it sits beside key shipping lanes which would in peacetime carry grain to feed the world.
