On what could potentially be a record cold Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the NFL officials involved with the Deflategate investigation will lead the officiating team. Clete Blakeman will cap his 11th season as an NFL official with a second-straight AFC Championship game, this one a 6:40 p.m. kickoff in Kansas City, where Sunday night’s low temperature is forecast to be a scant 6 degrees. Past history has a majority of New England aware the game footballs will thus be softer than normal, given the chill will contract the air and lower their internal pressure. Blakeman, hopefully, has learned that lesson as well. He was one of the two officials who measured the PSI in the footballs at Gillette Stadium during halftime of the 2014-15 AFC Championship game between the Patriots and Colts, his determinations ultimately costing Tom Brady four games to start the 2016 season and the Patriots two draft picks, including a first-rounder. Blakeman’s name was thus all over the Wells … [Read more...] about Sunday’s Patriots-Chiefs referee had hand in Deflategate, but …
Associated Press Published 10:32 PM EST Jan 5, 2019 Houston – A year ago at this time Andrew Luck was at home struggling with an injured shoulder that cost him the entire season. On Saturday he wrote a happy ending to the latest chapter of his comeback season, throwing for 222 yards and two touchdowns and the Indianapolis Colts raced out to a big lead and cruised to a 21-7 win over the Houston Texans in the wild-card game. Luck put on a show in his hometown in a stadium where he’d attended games throughout childhood and played in them since high school, throwing for 191 yards and two touchdowns before halftime to help the Colts (11-6) build a 21-0 lead. He denied feeling “at home” at NRG Stadium, but admitted to having warm feelings for the city he grew up in and where his grandparents and many friends still reside. “But it’s still an away stadium,” he said. “It was very loud, very energetic, but fun to win, certainly.” Running … [Read more...] about NFL playoffs: Indianapolis Colts advance with a lotta Andrew Luck
Michael Marot, Associated Press 12:04 AM INDIANAPOLIS — Adam Vinatieri sits at one end of the Indianapolis Colts’ locker room, his expanding white beard nearly a perfect match to his helmet and jersey. He doesn’t listen to the hip-hop music in the background, doesn’t pretend to understand the shiny, new electronic gadgets everyone else plays with and certainly doesn’t pay much attention to the trends outside these walls. Yet in Vinatieri’s mind, this is still the perfect spot. Here, in a league known for being traditionally unkind to “old” men, the 46-year-old kicker — who has been gone from the Patriots longer than he was with them — feels comfortable retelling playoff yarns, discussing union business, even offering informal personal advice to teammates who, in some cases literally come from a different generation. “He seems like he’s the same age he was when I first came in here and I guess that’s been … [Read more...] about Thirteen years after the Pats, Adam Vinatieri wants to keep going

I haven’t been this sure about a Sox acquisition since they beat everyone to the punch and bagged Pablo Sandoval after the 2014 World Series. The Sox will pay more than $84 million to their top four starters next year. It’s a serious commitment to winning now. ■ The Red Sox are going to the White House sometime in February, March, or April. This wasn’t such a big deal back in 1984 when the Celtics went to visit with Ronald Reagan a few hours after winning their 16th NBA championship on a hot weeknight at the Garden against the Lakers.
