Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 33 The day’s first caller begged for help to cross state lines and end her pregnancy. “Please,” the woman from Texas said in her voicemail. “Anything would be greatly appreciated.” Three states away, in southern Illinois, Alison Dreith heard the plea and grinded a toothpick between her teeth. She’d started chewing them last year as a stress reliever the day Texas all but banned abortions. Now the stick darted across her mouth, left to right, right to left. She felt shaky. “It’s starting,” said Dreith. “What we’ve been worrying about for years.” When desperate people can’t obtain abortions near home -- when they need plane tickets, bus fare, babysitters -- they reach out to groups like Dreith’s, the … [Read more...] about Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
Commentary: Tucker Carlson hits a dangerous new low in his response to the Buffalo shooting
"What is hate speech? Well, it's speech that our leaders hate." The hypocrisy was stunning, even by Tucker Carlson's standards. During a broadcast of his show "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Monday, the Fox News host blamed Saturday's mass shooting of 13 people in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo, New York, by a radicalized white gunman on the policies of President Joe Biden, the Democratic Party and pretty much anyone who's called for a stop to the hate speech and racist ideology espoused by the suspect — and Carlson himself. Outcry that Carlson address his part in spreading a xenophobic philosophy known as the "great replacement theory" — a paranoid notion that white, Christian people are being intentionally replaced by people of color, Jews, Muslims and immigrants — was met during Monday's telecast with no acknowledgement whatsoever of the role Carlson himself has played in energizing white nationalists, but plenty of moaning about who the real victims are in this … [Read more...] about Commentary: Tucker Carlson hits a dangerous new low in his response to the Buffalo shooting
Buffalo suspect: Lonely, isolated — and a sign of trouble
CONKLIN, N.Y. (AP) — In the waning days of Payton Gendron’s COVID-19-altered senior year at Susquehanna Valley High School, he logged on to a virtual learning program in economics class that asked: “What do you plan to do when you retire?” “Murder-suicide,” Gendron typed. Despite his protests that it was all a joke, the bespectacled 17-year-old who had long been viewed by classmates as a smart loner was questioned by state police over the possible threat and then taken into custody and to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation under a state mental health law. But a day and a half later, he was released. And two weeks after that, he was allowed to participate in graduation festivities, including riding in the senior parade, where he was photographed atop a convertible driven by his father and festooned with yellow-and-blue balloons and signs reading, “Congratulations" and "Payton Gendron.” That account of Gendron’s brush with the law last spring, according to authorities and … [Read more...] about Buffalo suspect: Lonely, isolated — and a sign of trouble

1st major court test for DOJ special counsel investigating origins of Russia probe
The Justice Department special counsel investigating the origins of the probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election is facing his first major test in federal court this week, with the start of a criminal trial against a Democrat-linked lawyer charged with lying to the FBI. Prosecutors are seeking to convince a jury that lawyer Michael Sussmann lied in bringing forth a tip to a senior FBI official in September 2016 about potential connections between then-presidential candidate Donald Trump's company and a Russian bank, by allegedly telling the official that he was not working on behalf of any client at the time. According to John Durham, who has been investigating the Russia probe for more than three years and was appointed special counsel by former Attorney General William Barr just before Barr’s resignation in 2020, Sussmann was in fact bringing the info to then-FBI general counsel James Baker as part of Sussmann's work for Hillary Clinton's political … [Read more...] about 1st major court test for DOJ special counsel investigating origins of Russia probe

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON - When the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol gathered for a private retreat last month at the Library of Congress, two members engaged in a spirited debate over a question at the heart of the committee's work. One, Democratic Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Florida, insisted the committee should focus less on former president Donald Trump and do more to examine the security and intelligence failures that led to the breach of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. She also urged the committee to look harder at what can be done to prevent another attack, according to people familiar with the matter. The other member, Republican Vice Chair Liz Cheney of Wyoming, argued that the committee should keep an intense focus on the former president. "Rep. Cheney's view is that security at the Capitol is a critical part of the … [Read more...] about Inside the Jan. 6 committee, key questions remain as hearings loom

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The United States government is moving to ease a few economic sanctions on Venezuela in a gesture meant to encourage resumed negotiations between the U.S.-backed opposition and the government of President Nicolás Maduro. The limited changes will allow Chevron Corp. to negotiate its license with the state-owned oil company, PDVSA, but not to drill or export any petroleum of Venezuelan origin, two senior U.S. government officials told The Associated Press late Monday. The officials spoke under the condition of anonymity because the formal announcement had not been made. Additionally, Carlos Erik Malpica-Flores — a former high-ranking PDVSA official and nephew of Venezuela’s first lady — will be removed from a list of sanctioned individuals, they said. The moves follow goodwill gestures by Maduro after meeting in March with representatives of the administration of … [Read more...] about US to ease a few economic sanctions against Venezuela
