Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
The Pacific Crest Trail draws thousands of people from all experience levels annually. Some are thru-hikers hoping to complete the 2,650-mile trek through California, Oregon and Washington (from the Mexican border to Canada), in one journey, while others are weekend backpackers and day hikers taking on smaller sections of the trail. The hikers regularly contend with challenges like hypothermia, heat exhaustion, poisonous plants, lightning, bears and rattlesnakes, along with wildfires and other impacts of climate change . But this year, experts warn, hikers face one of the greatest risks in the trail’s history: the record-setting Sierra Nevada snowpack . "These large snowpacks can be susceptible to fast melt if the weather conditions are right," Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the Central Sierra Snow Lab , told SFGATE. "Periods of above-average temperatures, particularly if they're prolonged, can cause significant rises in stream and river flows, which can be dangerous.” … [Read more...] about Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
Review: Prohibition-era tale ‘Hang the Moon’ goes down easy
“Hang the Moon” by Jeannette Walls (Scribner) Jeannette Walls burst on the scene with her intensely personal memoir “The Glass Castle” in 2005. That book spent more than eight years on the hardcover and paperback bestseller lists and eventually became a 2017 movie starring Brie Larson, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson. This book, while fiction, borrows heavily from the histories of real people and events who lived during the Prohibition era in Virginia. The narrator, Sallie Kincaid, is the daughter of the most prosperous man in Claiborne County, who everyone calls “Duke.” The heart of the story picks up with Sallie at almost age 18, when she moves back to the family estate after a decade in exile living with her poor aunt “in the hollows” of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her memories of the Duke are almost entirely positive, but the events of the novel quickly challenge that as the plot speeds along at a breakneck pace. Before you know it the Duke is dead and Sallie stands to … [Read more...] about Review: Prohibition-era tale ‘Hang the Moon’ goes down easy
New Study Suggests Sniffing Someone’s Body Odor Could Ease Social Anxiety
Smelling other people’s sweat may help ease social anxiety, according to the latest study published by the Cambridge University Press. Lead researcher Elisa Vigna said when people are under a specific “state of mind” and then sweat, the perspiration includes “chemo-signals” that convey their “emotional state.” As a result, they elicit “corresponding responses” in those who smell it. Combined with mindfulness therapy, it may provide better results than those from therapy only. How did the researchers test body odor with social anxiety? Photo Credit: news.yahoo.com The social anxiety study involved collecting sweat from respondents. Then, the researchers showed short movie clips to elicit specific emotions like happiness or fear. Meanwhile, the patients were going through social anxiety treatment. Afterward, Vigna and her team collected sweat samples. The researchers invited 48 women aged between 15 and 35 years old with social anxiety to participate in … [Read more...] about New Study Suggests Sniffing Someone’s Body Odor Could Ease Social Anxiety
Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn reveals the horror of seeing child soldiers forced to kill
As mercenary swordsman Bronn, Game of Thrones star Jerome Flynn is a master warrior, a hardfaced killer you don’t want to mess with. It is a part Flynn, with his steely glare and craggy looks, plays to perfection. But even his tough exterior crumbled when he came face-to-face with real killers – child soldiers coerced into slaying fellow youngsters and men in one of the world’s most drawn-out conflicts. Jerome, 53, winced as he heard harrowing tales of civil war in Myanmar, South-East Asia, where thousands of boys, as young as 11, were forcibly recruited. On his trip to the former British colony of Burma, Jerome met Hein, who fears he killed 100. The horrifying image of one of the street children ( Image: PAUL WU/WORLD VISION) Deeply affected, the star said: “To meet a young man who as a child was forced into killing so many people, some as young as himself, to sit there with him as he shared his story – it was totally heart-wrenching.
