Avi Kwa Ame, or Spirit Mountain, near Nevada-California border designated a national monument
Over half a million acres within the triangulated borderlands of California, Nevada and Arizona have become a national monument for preservation and protection from development. About 15 miles from the California border, the new monument links with the Mojave Desert to further expand the largest concentration of Joshua trees in the world. Last week during the White House Conservation in Action Summit, President Joe Biden designated Avi Kwa Ame in Nevada (which translates to “Spirit Mountain” in Mojave) as the state’s newest national monument. It joins Nevada's three other monuments: Basin and Range, Gold Butte, and Tule Springs. The designation encompasses 506,814 acres, including Ava Kwa Ame, which rises 5,963 feet. Parasite Wipes Out California Sea Otters and There’s Potential Risk to Humans
California sea otters are in danger, not just from climate change or habitat destruction. A deadly parasite called Toxoplasma Gondii has been devastating otter populations in California for over a decade. Unfortunately, the problem shows no signs of slowing down. This parasite, found in cat feces, can infect otters and humans, making it a serious concern for public health and conservation. The unusual strain of Toxoplasma Gondii studied had not been detected in California before. Toxoplasma Gondii is a parasite that infects many warm-blooded animals, including humans. Cats are the parasite’s primary host and it spreads through their feces. When an animal (or human) ingests contaminated water or food, the parasite can enter its system and cause serious health problems. Related studies and their findings Four sea otters in California have died from a rare strain of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite that scientists said could pose a risk to human health. … [Read more...] about Parasite Wipes Out California Sea Otters and There’s Potential Risk to Humans

Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
The Pacific Crest Trail draws thousands of people from all experience levels annually. Some are thru-hikers hoping to complete the 2,650-mile trek through California, Oregon and Washington (from the Mexican border to Canada), in one journey, while others are weekend backpackers and day hikers taking on smaller sections of the trail. The hikers regularly contend with challenges like hypothermia, heat exhaustion, poisonous plants, lightning, bears and rattlesnakes, along with wildfires and other impacts of climate change . But this year, experts warn, hikers face one of the greatest risks in the trail’s history: the record-setting Sierra Nevada snowpack . "These large snowpacks can be susceptible to fast melt if the weather conditions are right," Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the Central Sierra Snow Lab , told SFGATE. "Periods of above-average temperatures, particularly if they're prolonged, can cause significant rises in stream and river flows, which can be dangerous.” … [Read more...] about Why the Pacific Crest Trail will be more dangerous than ever this year
I pooped myself during a marathon – I’m not grossed out by it and it was one my personal bests
An avid runner has revealed how she decided to poop herself instead of interrupting her run - and ended up achieving one of her personal bests. Event planner Tamara Torlakson, from Sacramento, told Insider how she emptied her bowels at the Long Beach Mountains 2 Beach Marathon in 2018, which she completed in three hours seven minutes. The keen jogger took part in the run 13 months after giving birth, and while she had taken her precautions and gone to the bathroom before the event's kick off, she felt like she had to go again halfway through her run. Tamara, who was 31 at the time, explained she was on track to beat her personal record and did not want the pit stop to ruin her time, so decided to keep going. She said that no one noticed what had happened to her during the run, adding she wouldn't have cared if they had, because 'marathoners don't judge.' Event planner Tamara Torlakson, from Sacramento, went viral after recounting to Insider how she emptied her bowels … [Read more...] about I pooped myself during a marathon – I’m not grossed out by it and it was one my personal bests
Why we’re putting off having children: We have sex four times a week and lie-ins every weekend – why ruin things?
A childfree couple has revealed why they are not interested in having children - revealing that their status as non-parents means they have sex four times a week, go on 12 holidays a year and enjoy lie-ins every weekend . According to Taylor Vasu, 28, and her husband, Justin, 27, from Orange County, California , they don't want to end up 'miserable by having kids'. The couple are intentionally childfree and label themselves as DINKS - which stands for dual income no kids. Taylor and Justin, who have been together for six years, spend their free-time travelling, going for spontaneous lunch dates, working out together and sleeping in on the weekends. They book time off work at a 'weeks notice' and say they have 'wild sex' four times a week. The couple (pictured) say that not having children allows them to enjoy their free time, and they take 12 holidays a year Taylor believes it would be 'irresponsible' for her and Justin, an IT sales executive, to have children … [Read more...] about Why we’re putting off having children: We have sex four times a week and lie-ins every weekend – why ruin things?
Another storm is forecast to hit the Bay Area. Here’s what to expect.
Here we go again. A low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to impact the San Francisco Bay Area from Monday through Wednesday, bringing more rain and wind to a region that was battered by a storm less than a week ago. This system is expected to reach peak intensity over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the California-Oregon border before drifting south along the California coast and passing by the Bay Area. The storm is expected to bring less severe impacts to the region than the last area of low pressure that passed directly over San Francisco, said Rick Canepa, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service expanded the Monday-Tuesday wind advisory to include the North Bay, East Bay and eastern Santa Clara hills in addition to the coastal areas. The advisory is in effect Monday night through Tuesday afternoon, with peak gusts expected to be up to 40 to 50 mph. Winds are expected to begin developing in the North Bay at … [Read more...] about Another storm is forecast to hit the Bay Area. Here’s what to expect.
