Chris Evert has claimed Novak Djokovic's controversial comments about equal pay were “cultural” - and an American player would not make them. The men's world No 1 met Evert and Billie Jean King in Miami on Wednesday after apologising for claiming on Sunday that men deserved to be paid more than women. The Serb later claimed it was “an honour” to talk to two giants of the game who have fought for equality. And speaking at a press conference, 18-time Grand Slam winner Evert said: “I think a lot of the comments are cultural, too. I doubt you hear that as much from the American men's tennis players and I'm sort of applauding the Americans for that. "I think the Europeans later on took a cue from the Americans and I think Americans accepted equality on a lot of different levels earlier than Europe did." Andy Murray, who employs female coach Amelie Mauresmo, has already condemned Djokovic. Why today’s female tennis stars are shout of order
At the best of times, it is never a pleasant experience to be serenaded by shrieking harridans. But the shrill racket, if you'll pardon the expression, emanating from your TV as the Australian Open women's singles final unfolded last weekend was probably the ghastliest noise since Little Mix won the X Factor final. Nothing is a bigger turn-off than the sound of female tennis players giving it the full Meg Ryan from that fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally. Nothing is more guaranteed to make you watch tennis with the sound turned down. And nobody will ever convince me that the noise pollution generated by Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova is anything other than pure gamesmanship, if not cheating. Congratulations to Azarenka. She was the best player in Melbourne, and it's good to see a new name on the roster of Grand Slam winners. Nice serve, but what a hideous din. After the King's Speech, meet the Queen's Screech. If stock cars having a smash-up on a race track … [Read more...] about Why today’s female tennis stars are shout of order
Novak pumped up for Paris
Serb bullish on French Open chances after Rome triumph ROME-That loss to Carlos Alcaraz seems to have motivated Novak Djokovic to step up his game. Just in time, too. A week after his defeat to the 19-year-old Alcaraz in Madrid, Djokovic won the Italian Open without dropping a set on Sunday for his first title of the year. Having missed a large portion of the season because he wasn't vaccinated against the coronavirus, the top-ranked Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0, 7-6 (5) for his sixth Rome title. Now, both Djokovic and Alcaraz need to be considered as top favorites for the French Open, which starts on Sunday. "I go there with the highest ambitions," Djokovic said. "I really like my chances. … The way I've been feeling on the court and off the court in the last few weeks, I really think I can go far." The status of Rafael Nadal, who has won 13 of his record 21 Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros, remains uncertain after the Spaniard's Italian Open ended earlier … [Read more...] about Novak pumped up for Paris

Wimbledon 2015: John McEnroe hints modern stars are ‘too nice’ as he reignites Jimmy Connors feud
John McEnroe has reopened his old feud with Jimmy Connors – and called for modern stars to show they don’t like each other. Connors infuriated his former fiancée Chris Evert by revealing in his autobiography that she had an abortion in 1974 – the year they both won Wimbledon. McEnroe and Connors always had a fiery relationship in their playing days and once nearly came to blows on court. And Super Brat McEnroe could not resist launching another verbal volley at his fellow American. Whoah! Whoops! Airing some dirty laundry. If I ever do another one, hopefully I won’t have to sell them that way. That’s his decision. Chris Evert believes Maria Sharapova isn’t getting support because she has no friends in tennis
Chris Evert has claimed players are not stepping up to support Maria Sharapova because the US-based Russian has no friends in the game. Sharapova does not need to look far for enemies, with Martina Navratilova stating on Wednesday that she did not believe her explanation for failing a drug test. And Dick Pound warned the World Anti-Doping Agency will intervene if it feels tennis does not give the world No 7 a sufficient ban. The former world No 1 admitted on Monday that she had tested positive for meldonium – a substance banned since January 1 – at the Australian Open. Evert told ESPN: “It’s hard to tell (the reaction from players) because Maria Sharapova has always isolated herself from the rest of the tennis world, from the players. She doesn’t have a lot of close friendships on the tour.
