Chris Evert puts Novak Djokovic’s equal pay comments down to cultural differences
Chris Evert has claimed Novak Djokovic's controversial comments about equal pay were “cultural” - and an American player would not make them. The men's world No 1 met Evert and Billie Jean King in Miami on Wednesday after apologising for claiming on Sunday that men deserved to be paid more than women. The Serb later claimed it was “an honour” to talk to two giants of the game who have fought for equality. And speaking at a press conference, 18-time Grand Slam winner Evert said: “I think a lot of the comments are cultural, too. I doubt you hear that as much from the American men's tennis players and I'm sort of applauding the Americans for that. "I think the Europeans later on took a cue from the Americans and I think Americans accepted equality on a lot of different levels earlier than Europe did." Andy Murray, who employs female coach Amelie Mauresmo, has already condemned Djokovic. Code.org founder a second-class citizen under visa change
Ali Partovi is the reason Silicon Valley loves immigrants. After moving to the United States from Iran when he was 11 years old, Partovi became a citizen, graduated from Harvard with a degree in computer science, sold a couple of startups, and invested in Facebook, Dropbox and Airbnb. He also helped launch Code.org, a nonprofit organization that focuses on getting more women and minorities into computer science. Despite his impressive resume, Partovi feels like a second-class American citizen — and for good reason: The government just told him exactly that. Thanks to a provision in the spending bill President Obama signed this month, Partovi will probably need a visa to travel to Europe and Japan — places most Americans can freely travel with just a passport — because his family comes from Iran. Not only does the provision amount to “discrimination based on national heritage,” Partovi said, “it also misses the mark, because it doesn’t make us any safer.” He was referring to … [Read more...] about Code.org founder a second-class citizen under visa change

Why today’s female tennis stars are shout of order
At the best of times, it is never a pleasant experience to be serenaded by shrieking harridans. But the shrill racket, if you'll pardon the expression, emanating from your TV as the Australian Open women's singles final unfolded last weekend was probably the ghastliest noise since Little Mix won the X Factor final. Nothing is a bigger turn-off than the sound of female tennis players giving it the full Meg Ryan from that fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally. Nothing is more guaranteed to make you watch tennis with the sound turned down. And nobody will ever convince me that the noise pollution generated by Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova is anything other than pure gamesmanship, if not cheating. Congratulations to Azarenka. She was the best player in Melbourne, and it's good to see a new name on the roster of Grand Slam winners. Nice serve, but what a hideous din. After the King's Speech, meet the Queen's Screech. If stock cars having a smash-up on a race track … [Read more...] about Why today’s female tennis stars are shout of order

Ukraine-Russia war LIVE – Putin’s soldiers REFUSING to fight as they uncover loophole to avoid extreme punishment
A lawyer has claimed that Vladimir Putin's Russian soldiers have been REFUSING to fight as they have uncovered a loophole to avoid extreme punishment. Mikhail Benyash, a lawyer who has been advising Russian soldiers has said that “hundreds and hundreds” of soldiers had been in touch with his team for advice on how they could avoid being sent to fight . Under Russian military rules, troops who refuse to fight in Ukraine can face dismissal but cannot be prosecuted, said Benyash. Among them were 12 national guardsmen from Russia ’s southern city of Krasnodar who were fired after refusing to go to Ukraine . “Commanders try to threaten their soldiers with prison time if they dissent, but we tell the soldiers that they can simply say no,” Benyash said, adding that he was not aware of any criminal cases against soldiers who refused to fight. “There are no legal grounds to start a criminal case if a soldier refuses to fight while on Russian territory.” Many … [Read more...] about Ukraine-Russia war LIVE – Putin’s soldiers REFUSING to fight as they uncover loophole to avoid extreme punishment
