Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Sep 22, 2019 A heavy exhibition season has an advantage: plenty of opportunities to watch select players audition for jobs. The Detroit Red Wings are three games down, six to go as they evaluate who should be on the roster when they open the 2019-20 season on Oct. 5 at Nashville, with the home opener coming one night later against the Dallas Stars. The only line coach Jeff Blashill has locked into is the top line. That’s good news for prospects such as Filip Zadina, Moritz Seider, Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno and Dennis Cholowski, whom Blashill plans to play in six, maybe even seven, games each. Blashill hasn’t been able to assemble certain lines and defense pairings he wants to see because, typical of this time of year, numerous guys have been or are nursing injuries. Dylan Larkin is expected to make his first appearance of the preseason Sunday when the Wings host the Pittsburgh … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings might have these options for season opener

The Detroit News Published 3:18 PM EDT Sep 17, 2019 The Detroit Red Wings haven't made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season. It might be a while before they return. The rebuild could be a slow one for the Red Wings, who come in 27th in ESPN's NHL future power rankings, which projects where the 31 teams stand for the next three years. ESPN gives the Red Wings an overall score of 71.6 in the rankings posted Tuesday, placing them in the "C" range on their grading scale. "When the Red Wings' dynastic run fizzled out, all that was left was the memories and bloated contracts," writes Emily Kaplan, an ESPN hockey reporter. "OK, it wasn't that dire. But the rebuild has been slow, as Detroit waits for unfavorable contracts to get off the books. Now that Steve Yzerman is in charge, there's hope that the path back to winning can be expedited." The ESPN crew, which includes senior NHL writer Greg Wyshynski and NHL draft and prospects analyst Chris Peters, rated each team in four … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings 27th in ESPN’s future power rankings
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 7:35 AM EDT Sep 16, 2019 TRAVERSE CITY — There was a sequence during Sunday’s Red-White game when Frans Nielsen drove to the net and slipped a pass to Filip Zadina, who tried to stuff the puck around the goal post. That’s where the Detroit Red Wings want Zadina to be: in a rectangular area around the net, roughly from hashmark to hashmark and hashmark to goal line, where the Wings say an estimated 40% of NHL goals are scored. It’s the same message the Wings stressed to Anthony Mantha a couple years ago: find ways to be around the net and the goals will start piling up. Zadina is in his second training camp with the Wings and under scrutiny as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 draft. He’s coming of an average first year of pro hockey, when he scored 16 goals among 35 points in 59 games in the American Hockey League and had one goal among three points in nine games … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings want Filip Zadina to score goals. Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 9:04 PM EDT Sep 11, 2019 The Detroit Red Wings will carry 67 players into Friday’s start of training camp. The 37 forwards, 22 defensemen and eight goaltenders will be split into three groups for the first two days of on-ice activities, then separated into two groups that will compete in Sunday’s Red-White game. The camp in Traverse City concludes with Monday’s practices, after which the Wings will return to Detroit in preparation for the first of nine exhibition games. The breakdown among teams Howe, Delvecchio and Lindsay have yet to be released, but usually it’s a mix of veterans and prospects, plus camp tryouts. It's a good opportunity to experiment with different line combinations and defense pairings. Top drafted prospects vying for jobs include forwards Filip Zadina, Evgeny Svechnikov, Michael Rasmussen, Christoffer Ehn, and Joe Veleno, along with free-agent signings Taro Hirose … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings training camp: Top prospects battle for jobs.
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Jun 10, 2019 In the lead-up to the 2019 NHL draft, Free Press sports writer Helene St James will be looking at draft fits for the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings hold the sixth overall pick in the June 21-22 event in Vancouver, British Columbia. I wrote about the benefit of drafting Cole Caufield at the NHL combine, and in the first mock draft, the Wings selected center Dylan Cozens. In this edition, I have the Wings selecting center Trevor Zegras, a product of the U.S. National Team Development Program based out of Plymouth. He came in at sixth on the NHL Central Scouting final draft prospect rankings. Zegras is 6-feet, 173 pounds and shoots left. He posted 26 goals and 61 assists in 60 games with the U18 team last season. Zegras draws comparisons to Chicago’s Patrick Kane, and models his game after Arizona’s Clayton Keller (Zegras has 100 career assists in 116 games split between the U18 and U17 NTDP teams; … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mock draft: Trevor Zegras creativity a draw
