Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 7:10 AM EDT Jun 19, 2019 Even before he knows the identity of their first-round pick, Steve Yzerman sounds excited about how the prospect can help the team. The Detroit Red Wings are in rebuild mode, and the next chance to add assets comes this weekend as they hold 10 picks at the 2019 NHL entry draft. There will be a highly regarded forward available at sixth overall, the second straight year the Wings have picked at that spot. Whomever they draft – options are likely to include Cole Caufield, Dylan Cozens, Kirby Dach, Vasili Podkolzin and Trevor Zegras – he’ll join a stable of prospects headlined by recent first-round picks in Filip Zadina, Joe Veleno, Michael Rasmussen, Dennis Cholowski and Evgeny Svechnikov. The hope is they shape the rebuild alongside headliners Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou and Tyler Bertuzzi. “The attitude is, we’re all trying to be a part of getting … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings draft preview: A chance to help rebuild

Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 7:28 AM EDT Jun 12, 2019 In the lead-up to the 2019 NHL draft, Free Press sports writer Helene St James will be looking at draft fits for the Detroit Red Wings: The Wings hold the sixth overall pick in the June 21-22 event in Vancouver, British Columbia. The benefit of drafting Cole Caufield was explored at the NHL combine. I had the Wings selecting Dylan Cozens in my first mock draft, and Trevor Zegras in the second. In this edition, I have the Wings selecting right wing Vasili Podkolzin. He has been projected to go as high as third overall, but a number of factors could see him available at sixth – or drop out of the top 10. Podkolzin, who will turn 18 later this month, is ultra competitive, a tenacious guy at both ends of the ice. He had eight goals and five assists in 26 games split between Russia’s junior league and second-highest league, and went scoreless in three KHL appearances. Those numbers pale … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mock draft: Vasili Podkolzin may intrigue
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Jun 10, 2019 In the lead-up to the 2019 NHL draft, Free Press sports writer Helene St James will be looking at draft fits for the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings hold the sixth overall pick in the June 21-22 event in Vancouver, British Columbia. I wrote about the benefit of drafting Cole Caufield at the NHL combine, and in the first mock draft, the Wings selected center Dylan Cozens. In this edition, I have the Wings selecting center Trevor Zegras, a product of the U.S. National Team Development Program based out of Plymouth. He came in at sixth on the NHL Central Scouting final draft prospect rankings. Zegras is 6-feet, 173 pounds and shoots left. He posted 26 goals and 61 assists in 60 games with the U18 team last season. Zegras draws comparisons to Chicago’s Patrick Kane, and models his game after Arizona’s Clayton Keller (Zegras has 100 career assists in 116 games split between the U18 and U17 NTDP teams; … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mock draft: Trevor Zegras creativity a draw
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 4:06 PM EST Jan 19, 2019 VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Detroit Red Wings are headed for a break, and when they come back, trade talk will intensify. We’re about a month away from the deadline (Feb. 25), with the Wings well outside the playoff picture. They’ve been playing well since New Year’s Eve, but game after game demonstrates they don’t have the talent that marks elite teams. They need another good draft, and the trade deadline may offer an opportunity to boost the rebuilding process. How many buyers there will be at the deadline should become clearer once the NHL comes out of the All-Star/bye break, which for the Wings spans Jan. 23-31. That’s the top question in this mailbag edition. Thank you as always for the questions. Q: What’s going to happen at the trade deadline? — P. Phillip, via email HSJ: Front-office personnel met this month in Florida to … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mailbag: What to expect at trade deadline
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 11:54 AM EST Dec 26, 2018 The Red Wings head back to work Thursday after a holiday break, their Christmas vacation offering a chance to relax and recharge. They entered the break after having to settle for a 5-4 loss in overtime in Toronto, and start on the road at Pittsburgh, then on to a Saturday game at Dallas. Their next home game is New Year’s Eve, against Florida — and that will be the Wings’ 41st game of the season. They head into the second half of the season with an eye to gaining ground in the standings in hopes of making the playoffs. Thanks for the questions for this holiday edition mailbag. Now that the Wings have played a segment of their season, what effect has the absence of Hank Zetterberg had on the team and its performance? — C.J. via email. HSJ: Dylan Larkin took it upon himself to help fill the void, and has done so both on and off the ice. He’s led the team in points since … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings mailbag: What has impacted Larkin most?
