Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 6:14 PM EST Feb 19, 2019 For a guy who has gotten pretty good at making the right call as a TV analyst, Tony Romo blew it when he accepted a sponsor’s exemption Tuesday to play in the PGA Tour’s AT&T Byron Nelson in May. The retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback is stealing an opportunity from a real, pro golfer or a promising young amateur who is committed to making golf his career. And Romo, 38, is neither of these. He's nothing more than a dilettante, a former star athlete who's taking a more deserving person’s place. As a former pro athlete, he should be ashamed of himself. I respected Romo for carving out a lengthy NFL career with the Cowboys and making four Pro Bowls despite not being drafted. But I wonder how Romo would have felt back in the early part of his career, when he was still a backup waiting for his chance, if the Cowboys decided they could sell more preseason tickets if they gave … [Read more...] about Tony Romo wrong to accept PGA Tour sponsor’s exemption

Does your insurer affect the wait for an appointment?
Keith Roach To Your Health Published 11:18 PM EST Nov 25, 2018 Dear Dr. Roach: In a recent column, a person wrote that it took weeks to schedule an appointment with her primary care physician. I have found that it takes months, not weeks, to schedule an appointment with primary care physicians in my area (a large city with two medical schools). I am on Medicare, as are many of my friends. They have said that they have the same problem. Do some medical practices limit the number of appointments available for people on Medicare? My younger friends with regular insurance don’t seem to have this problem. L.S. Dear L.S.: A 2015 study of primary care physicians found that 93 percent accept Medicare, while 94 percent accept private insurance. In a 2018 study, 13 percent of Medicare recipients said there was a small problem finding a new primary care physician, and 14 percent said there was a big one. I suspect there are strong regional differences; however, those with private … [Read more...] about Does your insurer affect the wait for an appointment?
Does this mother belong in prison?
opinion Nancy Kaffer Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Oct 24, 2018 It's hard to find anyone who thinks Siwatu-Salama Ra belongs in prison. Last year, Ra, 26, waved an unloaded gun at an acquaintance whom Ra's mother, Rhonda Anderson, says became belligerent and violent at Anderson's home, using her car to hit a parked car in which Ra's toddler daughter Zala was playing. No one was hurt. No shots were fired. Ra, an activist and community organizer with no previous criminal record, is a legal gun owner with a concealed-carry permit, who says she was afraid that the acquaintance would harm her daughter, her mother, or herself. But a jury believed that Ra acted in anger, not in self-defense, and found her guilty of felonious assault. A Wayne County Circuit Court judge believed that offense merited probation, not imprisonment, sentencing the then-pregnant Ra to two years' probation for the felonious assault. But because Ra was also charged … [Read more...] about Does this mother belong in prison?
