This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is due Wednesday to face questioning under oath in New York's civil investigation into his business practices. But will he answer? The ex-president's lawyer has indicated that he will advise Trump to stay mum and invoke the Fifth Amendment's protection against self-incrimination. It's a constitutional right that gets high-profile exposure in settings from Congress to TV crime shows, but there are nuances. Here's what it means — and doesn't — to “plead (or ‘take’) the Fifth." WHAT IS ‘THE FIFTH’? The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution establishes a number of rights related to legal proceedings, including that no one “shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself.” In the most direct sense, that means criminal defendants don't have to give damning testimony in their own cases. But it has come to apply in … [Read more...] about What does ‘plead the Fifth’ mean? Will Donald Trump do it?

Trump to be deposed Wednesday in New York civil probe of his business

August 10, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

NEW YORK - Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to give sworn testimony Wednesday in the New York attorney general's civil probe into his business dealings, specifically his representations to lenders and tax agencies about the value of his assets. Trump announced the long-delayed deposition two days after his Mar-a-Lago home and beach club was searched by the FBI as part of a Justice Department probe into missing records that were generated during his presidency and were supposed to be catalogued with the National Archives. FBI agents left the property Monday with about a dozen boxes that were being stored at Trump's estate. The former president had surrendered about 15 boxes to the archives in January, some of which contained material marked classified. In announcing the legal action at his Palm Beach, Fla., property, Trump blasted the Justice Department for seeking a search warrant and insisted he had been cooperative with authorities and that there was no need for an … [Read more...] about Trump to be deposed Wednesday in New York civil probe of his business

They calculate that a post-Capitol riot Trump, particularly a Trump bruised by the slick made-for-TV drama series known as the House January 6 Committee hearings, is their best shot at electing a Democrat. The FBI’s search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence is yet another hardball move that Democrats figure will stoke GOP anger – enough to get Trump nominated. From there, Democrats surmise, he cannot win a national election, so they would retain the White House. Trump ties may come back to haunt in swing state Wisconsin

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Donald Trump reasserted his grip on Republicans in Wisconsin's primary, but both Democrats and Republicans said Wednesday that the former president's involvement in key races for governor and U.S. Senate could come back to hurt them in the swing state. Trump's pick for governor, construction company co-owner Tim Michels, beat out the choice of establishment Republicans. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers said that means Michels now “owns” Trump and he won't be able to moderate in the general election. “His relationship with Trump is going to drive this campaign,” Evers told reporters after eating breakfast with his newly minted running mate, state Rep. Sarah Rodriguez. “Trump owns him, he owns Trump. That’s his problem, that’s not mine.” Michels’ campaign adviser Chris Walker reacted to Evers’ comments in a statement, saying Evers and President Joe … [Read more...] about Trump ties may come back to haunt in swing state Wisconsin

What’s next for Alex Jones after $49M Sandy Hook verdict?

August 10, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

DALLAS (AP) — The nearly $50 million defamation verdict against Alex Jones for his years of lies about the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre is far from a final reckoning. Jones' attorneys plan to appeal and try to lower the price tag a Texas jury put on his false claim that the nation’s deadliest school shooting — which killed 20 students and six teachers — was a hoax. The conspiracy theorist faces bankruptcy and other defamation lawsuits. And the courtroom conduct of Jones and his lawyers has exposed the Infowars host to new legal perils, including possible sanctions, allegations of perjury and renewed scrutiny in the investigation of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Here's a look at the fallout from the successful suit against Jones by the parents of one of the child victims in the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at the school in Newtown, Connecticut.
