Real Madrid draw Barcelona in huge Copa del Rey semi-final El Clasico… but you probably won’t be able to watch it

January 30, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

REAL MADRID and Barcelona are set to square off in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. The two rivals drew each other after Los Blancos eliminated Atletico Madrid and Barca knocked out Real Sociedad in the quarter-finals. That sets up an exciting El Clasico between the two sworn enemies amid an intense LaLiga battle - with Los Blancos only five points behind Xavi's leaders. But British fans may not be able to watch it as no TV channel on these shores has bought the rights to the Copa del Rey. That is why no one got to see the exciting Madrid derby, in which Real equalised in the final few minutes and turned the game on its head during extra-time with a 3-1 win. This comes as a major surprise considering that Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and Viaplay combined cost more than £1,000 per year. Former Barcelona Academy member Sandro Reyes is headed back to Europe. —CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Sandro Reyes, the former FC Barcelona academy member who has become a promising mainstay of the Philippine Azkals, is taking his talents back to Europe. The 19-year-old midfielder on Tuesday announced that he has signed with SpVgg Greuther Furth, a second division club in Germany, after spending the past two years juggling his act on the domestic front and for various national age group squads. “[The] past couple [of] football years haven’t been the smoothest, but hours of work every single day, faith in God’s will, and of course, positivity and optimism always in between kept me going through my rough football days,” a reflective Reyes said. “This one is for those beside me through it all, and for the young boys and girls in the Philippines to dream big; one big para sa bayan (for the country),” he added. Reyes’ former Azkals teammate Stephan Schrock played for Greuther’s main squad … [Read more...] about Teen Azkals mainstay Reyes signs with German club Furth

New Mexico considers roasted chile as official state aroma

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The sweet smell of green chile roasting on an open flame permeates New Mexico every fall, wafting from roadside stands and grocery store parking lots and inducing mouth-watering visions of culinary wonders. Now one state lawmaker says it's time for everyone to wake up and smell the chile. Sen. Bill Soules' visit with fifth grade students in his southern district sparked a conversation about the savory hot peppers and the potential for New Mexico to become the first state in the nation to proudly have an official state aroma, a proposal now being considered by lawmakers. “It’s very unique to our state,” the Las Cruces Democrat said of roasting chile. “I have tried to think of any other state that has a smell or aroma that is that distinctive statewide, and I can’t think of any.” For New Mexico, chile is more than a key … [Read more...] about New Mexico considers roasted chile as official state aroma

The story of the 900-pound bike seen at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park

January 31, 2023 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

In the middle of a San Francisco downpour, Eric Schmidt pedaled directly toward a curb on the outskirts of Potrero del Sol Park. This would’ve spelled disaster for a normal bike, but Schmidt smiled as his 900-pound vehicle sauntered easily up onto the sidewalk. He continued riding through the park on this wet January day, past a maintenance crew who seemed unfazed by what appeared to be a VW bug rolling down the bike path. For the past few months, Schmidt has been traversing San Francisco in his “use less car” as a way to challenge people’s ideas about transportation and fossil fuel use. From a distance, his ride looks like a normal VW bug that just happens to be driving at a snail’s pace, but a closer look reveals that it’s powered by two bicycles welded into the car frame. “According to the DMV, it’s still just a car in my name,” Schmidt says. “I got a registration notice; they don’t ask how it’s powered.” Schmidt purchased the 1971 VW bug for $1,300 in 2022 after trying … [Read more...] about The story of the 900-pound bike seen at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park

Atherton passes housing plan with tweak to lot near Steph Curry’s home

February 1, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Atherton passed a modified Housing Element plan after a marathon meeting on Tuesday night that drew heated opposition to apartment buildings from residents of the wealthy Silicon Valley town. The plan, which is mandated by the state and calls for 348 homes in the next eight years, sparked concerns from residents including Warriors superstar Steph Curry and his wife Ayesha . The Currys said a potential plan for 16 townhomes at 23 Oakwood would “loom” behind their home. “Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home,” they wrote in a letter last month. Atherton’s City Council approved a plan that would allow 16 townhomes on the site, but also introduced a zoning overlay that would allow for single-family homes as an alternative. The Almanac first reported the Currys’ opposition and details of Tuesday’s meeting. A representative for Curry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. … [Read more...] about Atherton passes housing plan with tweak to lot near Steph Curry’s home

Democratic-backed Connecticut bill would ban ‘Latinx’ term

February 1, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A group of Hispanic lawmakers in Connecticut has proposed that the state follow Arkansas' lead and ban the term “Latinx” from official government documents, calling it offensive to Spanish speakers. The word is used as a gender-neutral alternative to “Latino” and “Latina" and is helpful in supporting people who do not identify as either male or female, according to the word's backers. But state Rep. Geraldo Reyes Jr. of Waterbury, the bill's chief sponsor and one of five Hispanic Democrats who put their names on the legislation, said Latinx is not a Spanish word but is rather a “woke” term that is offensive to Connecticut's large Puerto Rican population. “I'm of Puerto Rican descent and I find it offensive," he said. Last month, Arkansas banned government officials from using Latinx on formal documents as part of several orders issued by Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders within hours of her taking office. Reyes said his motivations might be … [Read more...] about Democratic-backed Connecticut bill would ban ‘Latinx’ term

I found £47,000 stuffed into the walls of my new home hidden in Nesquik cans – but there’s a devastating twist

February 1, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

A HOMEOWNER couldn't believe his luck when he found bundles of banknotes hidden in the walls in old Nesquik cans. Toño Piñeiro uncovered a total of six ageing containers in various parts of a house he is renovating in Spain . Stuffed inside were neatly ironed banknotes totalling more than nine million pesetas, Spain's old currency. That is the equivalent of more than £47,500. However his joy was short-lived when he found some of the notes were so old he could no longer exchange them for euros. The Bank of Spain stopped accepting the older notes and Toño was told he had missed the deadline. read more on lucky finds WINNING BID I found £130k cash in kitchen cabinets from eBay… but there’s a gutting twist GOLD PLATED I found old plate gathering dust on a shelf - now I've sold it for £210,000 Around half of his windfall turns out to be worthless. Man Utd flops: What happened to Bebe, Obertan and 8 other transfer disasters

May 4, 2021 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Manchester United have one of the largest scouting networks in the world that has helped them get the jump on their rivals. To date, their signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for a paltry £12.24 million remains one of the greatest of all-time and probably won't be bettered. Many United fans will be hoping for a similar success story from Ivorian starlet Amad Diallo, the 18-year-old who signed from Atalanta for £37m in January, while Facundo Pellistri is another talent recently signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils have had many success stories owing to their scouting knowledge in Latin America; the signing of a virtually unknown Javier Hernandez in 2010 is testament to that. But even the best managers in the world such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal are partial to making blunders when it comes to transfers. Here are 10 flops who turned out for Manchester United and what happened to them since… 1.
