Eli Manning, Hall of Famer? You’d better believe it

· October 7, 2019 ·

Back when Manning was the Patriots’ worst nightmare. Bill Belichick wasn’t kidding Monday when he concluded his heaping pile of praise for Manning by saying, “I have a ton of respect for Eli and all that he’s done. I wish he’d done a little bit less in a couple games against us.” Does anyone actually need reminding? Tom Brady & Co. would have two more rings if not for Manning’s heroics. There was the first shocking upset back in February 2008, when a then-perfect Patriot team watched Manning escape a sack he never should have escaped to complete a pass he never should have completed, a connection to David Tyree that remains one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time. Then there was the upset sequel four years later, when one Manning throw again made the difference in the game, a sideline strike to Mario Manningham that you can put up against any throw by any great quarterback in a league celebrating its 100th anniversary this … [Read more...] about Eli Manning, Hall of Famer? Taunton man dies of EEE, as the dangerous illness strikes again

· October 13, 2019 ·

“He was a good guy, taken too young, Keith Mosman, a 60-year-old Raynham resident said. “He fought like a son-of-a-gun.” The state Department of Public Health did not respond to requests for information about Mosman’s case Sunday night. The agency this year has reported 12 confirmed cases of the rare but deadly disease. Three of those patients had died before the latest fatality. Two men in their 70s, one from Freetown and another from Hampden County, died of EEE in September. A Fairhaven woman in her 50s died from EEE in August, officials have said. EEE causes brain inflammation and is transmitted to humans bitten by infected mosquitoes, according to federal authorities. There is no cure for the disease, and those who recover from it often live with severe neurological complications. Scott Mosman lost consciousness and was taken to Morton Hospital in Taunton on Sept. 6., according to his brother. He was then transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, where … [Read more...] about Taunton man dies of EEE, as the dangerous illness strikes again

Preseason darlings have turned back into the Browns

· October 12, 2019 ·

Their 2-3 record entering Sunday’s home game against the Seahawks is bad enough. But they were embarrassed on national TV last week, looking disorganized and feckless in a 31-3 loss to the 49ers. “To say we didn’t play well Monday night is an understatement,” defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. “Very embarrassing the way the defense performed, and I take full blame and responsibility for that.” The Browns’ defense certainly played poorly in San Francisco, and is ranked 21st in points allowed (24.4 per game). But the offense looks dysfunctional under first-time head coach Freddie Kitchens. Mayfield has just four touchdown passes against eight interceptions this year, his 55.9 completion percentage ranks 33rd out of 34 qualifying quarterbacks, and his 68.5 passer rating ranks 32nd. And Beckham has been shockingly quiet, with 23 catches for 335 yards and just one touchdown. Beckham has had a career-low two catches in each of his last … [Read more...] about Preseason darlings have turned back into the Browns

Red Sox willing to take their time replacing Dave Dombrowski

· October 4, 2019 ·

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman isn’t under contract for 2020. There is no evidence that suggests he would leave Los Angeles given how he has helped set up the team for long-term success. But he has yet to agree to a new contract. Team president Stan Kasten expects it to happen. But until Friedman signs a new deal, the Red Sox have to at least investigate the possibilities. He would be a perfect choice. Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim (pronounced HIGH-em) Bloom fits the Sox’ criteria. He’s a rung below Erik Neander in Tampa Bay’s structure but has been influential in putting the roster together. The Rays have won only six fewer regular-season games than the Red Sox over the last two years spending despite roughly $333 million less on payroll. Friedman left the Rays for the Dodgers and instilled financial discipline while remaining successful. Bloom could do the same for the Sox. The Dodgers combine … [Read more...] about Red Sox willing to take their time replacing Dave Dombrowski
