Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 9:56 AM EST Dec 19, 2018 With the playoffs no longer a possibility, the Detroit Lions are taking the prudent approach with their promising rookie running back. The Lions placed leading rusher Kerryon Johnson on injured reserve Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, with the knee injury he suffered in a Nov. 18 win over the Carolina Panthers. A second-round pick out of Auburn, Johnson helped transform the NFL’s worst rushing offense last year into a respectable unit this season and appears to be a big part of the Lions’ future. More Lions coverage: Lions fans: Save your children from the misery you have felt It took 13 seasons, but the Lions have worn me down He leads the team with 641 yards rushing on 118 carries despite missing the last four games, and in September he became the first Lion to rush for 100 yards in a game since Reggie Bush in 2013. Johnson had two 100-yard performances in his first two months as a … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions place Kerryon Johnson on injured reserve

Carlos Monarrez Detroit Free Press Published 3:13 PM EST Dec 8, 2018 The Detroit Lions have finished the NFL season in second place! No, not second place in the NFL standings. Or the NFC standings. Or the NFC North standings. But it is in a meaningful category: The NFL’s most productive rookie class this year. So yes, there’s hope for your Lions after all. That hope is based on an ESPN ranking, which in turn is based on the overall grades Pro Football Focus gave to all 32 teams’ drafted and undrafted rookies through Week 13. The Lions only finished behind the champion Cleveland Browns. (Disclaimer: People like me, who write about the NFL, look for any and all opportunities to use the phrase “champion Cleveland Browns”). The Browns’ success largely hinged on Baker Mayfield, who is PFF’s 14th-highest-graded quarterback this season. But the Lions had a very strong showing. Da’Shawn Hand led the way. He ranks 12th out of 125 interior … [Read more...] about Detroit Lions’ rookie class ranks second in the NFL. Who knew?
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 4:52 PM EST Dec 7, 2018 Allen Park – The temperatures are plummeting, it’s getting dark earlier and earlier, and the sky is gray during the day more often than not. Oh, and the Detroit Lions are playing meaningless football in December. Welcome to your version of seasonal depression. The Lions travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals this weekend and I’m struggling to provide you with a reason to care about the game. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, this week’s matchup earns a score of 2.7 out of 100. And it’s probably not going to be any more compelling when the Lions head back on the road next week to battle the Buffalo Bills. The 4-8 Lions are bad. Worse than just about anyone could have expected when the team hired Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to replace Jim Caldwell and elevate the franchise from the hamster wheel of mediocrity to a true contender. The New York Jets did … [Read more...] about Rogers: Detroit Lions are boring and\u00a0bad, offer little reason to watch
Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 3:59 PM EST Nov 30, 2018 Allen Park -- The Detroit Lions injury report look about how you'd expect had you followed the roster's practice habits this week. The team ruled out running back Kerryon Johnson, fullback Nick Bellore and wide receiver Brandon Powell for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson hasn't practiced for two weeks after suffering a knee injury against the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 18. Bellore, meanwhile, was sidelined all week by an ankle injury, while Powell suffered a calf injury during Thursday's practice and sat out Friday's session. In addition to the trio that's been ruled out, the Lions listed wide receiver Bruce Ellington (back) and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck) as questionable and tight end Michael Roberts (shoulder) as doubtful. All three were limited during the practice week. Justin Rogers The Detroit News Published 3:39 PM EST Nov 30, 2018 Allen Park -- When a season is going poorly, as the Detroit Lions' 2018 campaign has to this point, it's a convenient coping mechanism to look to the future, identifying the team's building blocks and figuring out hypothetical ways the franchise can build around them. But here comes ESPN to rain on your parade. In ESPN's annual list of top 25 players under the age of 25, not one Lions player made the list. Instead, the rankings are dominated by players on current division leaders. The Chiefs, Saints and Steelers each have three players who made the cut, while the 10-1 Los Angeles Rams have two of the top-10. The Chiefs, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and running back Kareem Hunt, have three players in the top five.
