opinion Glenn Spencer Published 2:53 p.m. UTC Aug 24, 2018 If you watch TV or listen to the radio, it is clear that campaign season is upon us. Not only does this bring an onslaught of political ads, but it also means that elected officials in Washington, DC, will start introducing legislation intended to energize their supporters. This year is no exception, and just recently, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and Sen. Patty Murray D-Washingtom, introduced a pair of bills to do exactly that. Contrary to their lofty-sounding names—the Workplace Democracy Act and the Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act, respectively—the bills have nothing to do with democracy or freedom. In fact, among other things, both would strip away Michigan’s right-to-work status, which protects workers from paying unwanted union dues. No one should be surprised that Sanders and Murray would introduce bills like these. However, it is disappointing to see Sen. Fact versus opinion
opinion David Shribman Published 2:27 p.m. UTC Aug 23, 2018 Every four years, political professionals assess the landscape and gird for the final push toward the midterm congressional elections. With Donald Trump in the White House and with small Republican margins of control in both chambers of Congress and Democrats lusting for revenge, these contests are especially critical. And every midterm midsummer, different political elements rise to the surface. This year is especially rich in unknowns. Here are the factors that may influence the November contests and shape the political landscape into the next decade: If it is a referendum on Mr. Trump, then it is one of those rare midterm elections where national issues predominate and the performance of the chief executive matters. If it isn’t, then it is a series of local elections where compelling candidates can go against expectations and win contests in districts Mr. Trump carried decisively only 24 months earlier. … [Read more...] about Opinion: Forecast of issues for mid-term elections
When I moved to Switzerland in January 2011 and lived in French-speaking Nyon, near Geneva, I would not have imagined myself saying that Zug is now becoming the best place to live in Switzerland. This is not just because of the growing expat community that has made the place home but also because of how Zug has quickly adapted to its increasing popularity. Read also: Where in Switzerland do foreigners choose to live? Ask people in Switzerland and abroad about Zug and most will still tell you that, while they have heard of it, they don’t know much about it. And if they do know anything, it is most likely the fact that Zug is the canton with the lowest tax rates in Switzerland. Guggiwiese with stunning views of the old town, lake and mountains in Zug. Having been the capital of the … [Read more...] about Opinion: why Zug is becoming the best place to live in Switzerland
Friday newsletters always feature luxury travel contests, tips, series, or news. Today (September 15, 2017): Travel tip: Singapore Airlines vs Cathay Pacific: which one is best? Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines rank among the best airlines in the world for flying Business Class. Both carriers have scored numerous international awards for their revolutionary seat concept, world-class lounges, and refined service. Whether they like that or not, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines are often compared (and even benchmarked) with each other because they both have their hubs in South East Asia (making both airlines an evident choice if you have to travel to, from or via this region) and simply because of the fact they both have a solid reputation as the world’s top carriers creating a standard which others find difficult to follow. Both airlines feature in my top 10 lists of the best airlines for … [Read more...] about Singapore Airlines vs Cathay Pacific: which one is best?
