‘Our lives have changed completely’: Family of Vermont woman injured in tour boat explosion gives update on her condition
Stefanie Schaffer and her 13-year-old sister Brooke got to the dock early on June 30 with their mother, Stacey, and stepfather, Paul Bender. They were looking forward to the swimming pigs. It was the family’s first trip to the Bahamas, and, according to Bender, they’d spent several days deciding on which excursion voyage they wanted to take on their vacation. They eventually decided on Four C’s Adventures, arriving early to sign in and pay for the voyage that would take them to the Exuma Cays, a 20-mile round trip over the course of a couple hours. Abortion re-emerges as wedge issue in Michigan governor’s race
Jonathan Oosting The Detroit News Published 11:01 p.m. UTC Jul 24, 2018 Lansing — Abortion is re-emerging as a wedge issue in Michigan’s gubernatorial election amid speculation over the fate of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that invalidated broad state laws that criminalized abortion. Democrat hopefuls say they would fight for a woman’s right to choose a legal abortion if federal safeguards are overturned. Republican candidates say they would defend an old state law that would again make it a crime. President Donald Trump's second nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court has renewed the debate over the ruling and energized anti-abortion activists who have spent decades fighting to overturn it. If confirmed, Brett Kavanaugh would give the court five conservative justices. No sitting conservative justice has raised the issue of overturning Roe v. Wade, although some of them criticized Roe v. Wade's legal reasoning prior to joining … [Read more...] about Abortion re-emerges as wedge issue in Michigan governor’s race
Hunter syndrome: Racing against the clock
Kristen A. Graham Philly.com Published 9:41 p.m. UTC Jul 23, 2018 Roxborough, Pa. Emily Lieber is the kind of teacher you remember: Patient and fun, energetic and creative. Many of the kindergartners and first graders she has taught at Meredith Elementary School in South Philadelphia have a love for her that borders on reverence. “She’s magical,” said Christina Pascucci, Meredith’s Home and School Association president and a grateful former parent. That’s particularly remarkable given the things weighing on Lieber and her family. Lieber and her husband, Steve, have two spunky boys: Jonathan, almost 7, and Ethan, 4. Jonathan is healthy. Ethan has a rare genetic disorder that will, by the time he is 5, likely begin robbing him of his ability to walk, talk and recognize his family. Unchecked, it will kill him by the time he’s a teenager. “Teaching is a great distraction,” Lieber said. “But sometimes, it’s hard not to look … [Read more...] about Hunter syndrome: Racing against the clock
