The first fact you need to know is that, in recent years, airlines have adopted a policy of making widespread, preemptive cancellations in advance of an actual storm. They rely on weather reports in order to manage their planes and flight personnel more efficiently, to make sure planes and crews are in a position to re-start operations most readily, and to avoid the huge fines they have to pay if they strand you on the tarmac for more than three hours. Alitalia pilots and flight attendants are preparing to strike on Wednesday, October 9th, but the disruption is expected to start from Tuesday evening and last into Thursday morning. Valerie Deane writes On June 10 I flew out from Heathrow to Philadelphia to visit my daughter using a ticket I had bought direct from British Airways. Unfortunately the flight suffered a five-hour delay at Heathrow followed by a further hour on arrival in Philadelphia waiting for a gate and a marshall. The delay meant I was forced to find and pay for a motel for the night before I could continue my journey to my daughter’s house. On my return I applied to British Airways for compensation but this was rejected because the operating carrier was American Airlines. British Airways customer services said it would pass my request on to American which it duly did. Now I have received a very odd response from American saying I am not eligible for compensation for my flight from Charlotte. American Airlines is shuffling senior management in a bid to fix flight problems and reverse a stock slump.American said Thursday it will assign a senior vice president to each of four areas: operations, airline network, revenue and customers.
