Dave Hyde: Miami Heat, Florida Panthers start big playoff series — and blame TV for it happening at same time
Sorry if I’m distracted writing this Florida Panthers column. I’m on a second keyboard simultaneously writing a Miami Heat column. Both of our local teams are alive in the playoffs and — inexplicably and irretrievably — play Tuesday night to start an unfortunately overlapping schedule in what should be their rock fights of playoff series. It’s like two cousins having simultaneous weddings. Can you be in two counties at once? Should you be asked to? The Panthers drop the puck Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Tampa Bay Lightning in Sunrise in the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Heat tip off their Eastern Conference finals in Miami against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. They play the same nights in all four home games in their respective series, too. How dumb is that? They clash on six of the scheduled seven games, if necessary. Take your bathroom breaks strategically, folks. What will be a fun time, maybe a memorable time for South Florida sports is a little … [Read more...] about Dave Hyde: Miami Heat, Florida Panthers start big playoff series — and blame TV for it happening at same time
Gov. DeSantis taps state lawmaker as new secretary of state
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday appointed state Republican Rep. Cord Byrd as the new secretary of state, following the resignation of Laurel M. Lee. In a statement, DeSantis, a Republican, called Byrd a “staunch advocate for election security, public integrity, the fight against big tech censorship and the de-platforming of political candidates.” "Cord Byrd has been an ally of freedom and democracy in the Florida Legislature, and I am confident he will carry that mission forward as Secretary of State,” DeSantis said. Lee's resignation was announced Thursday. News outlets have reported that she is leaving the post as the state's top election official to run for Congress. The office shake-up comes months before the midterm elections and follows a new law creating an office under the secretary of state tasked with investigating voter fraud, a top Republican priority. It also occurs as Florida is embroiled in a legal challenge to a new congressional … [Read more...] about Gov. DeSantis taps state lawmaker as new secretary of state
Traded back and forth, Ford learns to live out of suitcase
NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Ford has learned to travel light — and quickly. Since the start of the season, the 29-year-old first baseman has played for Tacoma, San Francisco and Sacramento. Traded from Seattle to the Giants on April 30, he was dealt back to the Mariners on Thursday. On Friday night, he found his way to Citi Field, batting seventh for the Mariners as the designated hitter in a series opener at the New York Mets. “Down to one bag I'm traveling with, and that's just about it,” the 29-year-old first baseman said. "Five dress shirts, two pairs of pants and some shorts and T-shirts. So very simple packing at this point. Makes it a little easier. Plus, you don’t have to pay $150 for the third bag every time." Ford was a rare left-handed bat on the New York Yankees from 2019-21, hitting 17 homers with 41 RBIs in 101 games. His travels began last June 17, when he was traded to Tampa Bay and optioned to Triple-A Durham. Washington claimed him off waivers on Aug. 23 and … [Read more...] about Traded back and forth, Ford learns to live out of suitcase
Airline and public transportation mask mandate: How risky will travel be after rules expire in May?
UPDATE: A federal judge on Monday, April 18, struck down the federal mask mandate for airplanes and other modes of public transportation, leading major U.S. airlines to announce that masks were no longer required on domestic flights. BART, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and AC Transit were among the Bay Area transportation agencies that said that they would continue to require masks. Read the full story here . You’ll have to mask up for air travel and other public transportation for at least a few more weeks after federal officials on Wednesday extended the face-covering mandate - a move that Bay Area experts call prudent, for now. But they add that people will likely soon have to take their safety into their own hands when the COVID-19 requirement, one of the most visibly contentious throughout the pandemic, is retired. The federal mask mandate for public transportation and airplanes, which was issued early last year and was set to expire Monday after … [Read more...] about Airline and public transportation mask mandate: How risky will travel be after rules expire in May?
Baby found with FECES-covered pacifier in its mouth, sores, and blanket soaked in urine by horrified cops
A BABY was found in poor health and covered in human waste while police officers were investigating a domestic dispute, reports say. The infant was reportedly found lying in feces in a crib and covered in sores by sheriff’s deputies, who were investigating a disturbance at the Pinellas County home in Tampa, Florida . Millennial Money: Learn your parents’ financial plans ASAP
My mom died at age 61, when I was 31. Seeing her headstone in a field of others smacked me with a brutal, if obvious fact: Everyone, including everyone’s parents, will die. I promise I’m not trying to depress you. I want to prepare you, as this loss can happen sooner than you’d expect. And when parents die, it’s often up to their children to manage not just grief but also financial tasks. Planning for those to-do’s now could help later, when you experience what may be some of your hardest days. “We surely ought to have some idea of what we’re facing,” says Melanie Cullen, San Francisco Bay Area-based author of “Get It Together: Organize Your Records So Your Family Won’t Have To.” She adds: “On the other side of it, our parents need to know we’re interested, we care, we’re there to help.” Here’s why, how and what to talk about with your parents. WHY MUST I DISCUSS THIS MORBID TOPIC? Without documented plans for your parents’ end-of-life finances, you may wind up … [Read more...] about Millennial Money: Learn your parents’ financial plans ASAP
20 years since Navy ship sunk for artificial reef in Keys
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) — The 20th anniversary of the storied intentional sinking of a former Naval ship to become an artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is being celebrated Tuesday in Key Largo. The 510-foot-long (155-meter-long) Spiegel Grove earned international notoriety when it sank prematurely May 17, 2002, and landed with its upside-down bow protruding above the ocean’s surface about 6 miles (10 kilometers) off Key Largo. A massive remediation effort began, resulting in the former Landing Ship Dock being fully sunk on its starboard side June 10, 2002. Three years later, strong currents and waves generated from Hurricane Dennis when it was east of Cuba pushed the ship into the intended upright position on the ocean bottom about 130 feet (40 meters) below the surface. “Ultimately, the Spiegel Grove is a story that Hollywood would never have … [Read more...] about 20 years since Navy ship sunk for artificial reef in Keys
