Associated Press Published 9:17 PM EDT Mar 16, 2019 Fontana, Calif. — Cole Custer postponed Kyle Busch’s historic 200th victory for at least one more day. Custer held off Busch to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway on Saturday, preventing Busch from tying Richard Petty’s record with his 200th win across NASCAR’s three major series. Custer, 21, capitalized when a disastrous pit stop dropped Busch to 14th place with 33 laps to go in a race Busch had dominated up to that point. Although Busch charged back through the field, he couldn’t catch up to Custer, who drove his Stewart-Haas Racing Ford to his third career Xfinity victory on his home track. “You definitely look in the mirror and you see that black car, and you’re just hoping it doesn’t get bigger,” Custer said. Custer is from Ladera Ranch, an affluent coastal community in Orange County about 55 miles south of Fontana. The son of veteran racing … [Read more...] about Saturday’s motors: Custer wins Xfinity race at Fontana, denying Kyle Busch
Greg Beacham Associated Press Published 1:53 AM EDT Mar 16, 2019 Fontana, Calif. — Austin Dillon won the pole for the NASCAR Cup Series race in Auto Club Speedway on Friday after no drivers completed a lap in the final round of qualifying. Dillon got his fourth career pole essentially by default after a bizarre scene that ended with fans booing the drivers when they all waited too long to start their last laps. “I have seen it in other sports, but never seen it in ours,” Clint Bowyer said. “We just got booed, and it is disappointing.” With all 12 final-round drivers determined to go out as late as possible in a drafting group, every car idled near the front of the pit road in a Southern California-style traffic jam from the start of the five-minute final session until roughly 44 seconds remained. Everybody blew the timing, as it turned out: The cars had barely exited Turn 4 when time ran out, which meant none of the final laps counted.
