COMMENTARY By the time the Patriots and the San Diego (I don’t care) Chargers kick off their AFC divisional contest Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, both teams will understand the ramifications of a win. If the Kansas City Chiefs outlast the Indianapolis Colts in their divisional matchup on Saturday, either the Chargers or Patriots are headed to Arrowhead Stadium. Should the Colts pull off the upset of the AFC’s No. 1 seed, either the Chargers would get to host the AFC Championship game in their makeshift stadium two hours north of San Diego, or the world would have to suffer through a one-week retrospective of Deflategate with Indianapolis making its first playoff appearance in Foxborough since “PSI: New England.” It would be The McDaniels Bowl, the Patriots up against the franchise their offensive coordinator stiffed at the babbling altar of Jim Irsay. It would be Andrew Luck’s shoulder delivering a little comeuppance to the man who doubted the … [Read more...] about What experts are predicting for Sunday’s Patriots-Chargers game

New England football fans’ hearts and minds are zeroed in on the Patriots’ divisional round playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday, but there are three other important games this weekend to keep an eye on. On Saturday, the Colts visit the Chiefs to duke it out in the AFC’s other divisional match-up, and the Cowboys and Rams fight for a spot in the NFC Championship in prime time. Sunday, after the Patriots game, the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles head to New Orleans to continue their title defense. Here’s how some experts see the three non-Patriots games playing out this weekend: Indianapolis Colts (11-6) at Kansas City Chiefs (12-4): Saturday, Jan. 12, 4:35 p.m. Eastern Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports: Chiefs (-4.5) edge it out over the Colts. Wilson says Andrew Luck will keep up with Patrick Mahomes every bit he needs to, especially if Mahomes gets off to a slow start as he did last week, but he ultimately has the … [Read more...] about What experts are predicting for the NFL divisional round games
The New Orleans Saints are the overwhelming favorite to win Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. According to a good amount of predictions, they’ll do so at the hands of the Patriots. It’s to be expected after a topsy-turvy season that New England might not get overwhelming respect as favorites heading into the NFL’s playoff calendar. With the No. 2 seed, the Patriots potentially have to travel to Kansas City for the AFC Championship game, a difficult task for a team that was 3-5 on the road during the regular season. But even at Gillette Stadium, where the team was 8-0, there’s some level of disbelief in Tom Brady and Bill Belichick starting another march. One writer has them losing to the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC title game in Foxborough. Another has them losing to the Indianapolis Colts — the Colts — in the divisional round. Frank Reich’s Revenge or something. All seems set for a Super Bowl showdown between the Chiefs and Saints, … [Read more...] about What experts are predicting for the NFL playoffs
If the New England Patriots are able to handle the New York Jets Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium — and they will — they’ll officially secure the No. 2 seed in the AFC’s playoff picture and a first-round bye. But based on how the cards have fallen for this team recently, it probably makes more sense to expect them to nab the top seed. Despite back-to-back losses to the Dolphins and Steelers that figured to handicap their playoff positioning, the Chiefs, Texans, and Chargers have done everything in their powers to provide the Patriots the easiest path to the Super Bowl in Atlanta. So, Sunday’s slate of games should not only include a Patriots victory, but also a combination of the following: The Chiefs somehow lose to the lowly Oakland (rest in peace) Raiders at home. The Broncos handle the San Diego (I don’t care) Chargers at Mile High. There also are scenarios where the Pats can fall to the third or fourth seed as well, but fantasies are better … [Read more...] about What experts are predicting for Sunday’s Patriots-Jets game
