Another was given the choice of either denouncing fellow opposition activists or being jailed. And one is certain his brother was killed by the country’s security forces. What united them is their determination to resist Lukashenko by fighting against Russian forces in Ukraine. Belarusians are among those who have answered a call by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for foreign fighters to go to Ukraine and join the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine. And volunteers have answered that call, given the high stakes in a conflict which many people see as a civilizational battle pitting dictatorship against freedom. Formula One in TWO rows in Spain with Red Bull and Aston Martin at war and Fernando Alonso fuming at race stewards
FORMULA ONE has become embroiled in TWO rows at the Spanish Grand Prix. Red Bull are at loggerheads with Aston Martin over claims that the latter have copied their car design. And Fernando Alonso launched a scathing attack on the FIA race stewards, accusing them of being incompetent and "not very professional". The two flashpoints have ignited this sold-out race in Barcelona where local hero Alonso now faces a grilling by the FIA after his blasts. Meanwhile, Red Bull have also taken aim at the FIA after the governing body said they were satisfied that Aston Martin had NOT stolen their design. Eyebrows were raised when Aston Martin unveiled a host of new updates for their car here in Spain - with the sidepods and floor design looking similar to Red Bull's - prompting them to seek clarification from the FIA. Google Street View car captures ‘axe murder’ on UK street but there’s an explanation
Google's camera car seemingly caught two 'axe-wielding murderers bludgeoning a man to death' in broad daylight on a UK street. It shows the 'killers' braced to strike again as their 'victim' lies spread-eagle on the ground in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. But all is not as it seems, reports StokeonTrentLive. The bizarre scene was actually posed by quick-thinking pranksters from Blythe Bridge-based JMZ Ltd, who jumped into position after spotting the distinctive Google liveried car with its camera poking out of the roof. The image - captured in Elburton Road just a short distance from Fenton Methodist Church in 2014 - has resurfaced again after being shared on social media. Anyone wanting to check it out for themselves can still still see the 'crime scene' on Google Street View. Paul Ingle, the boss of JMZ Ltd which specialises in driveways, paving and patios, was surprised to learn the photo was doing the rounds again on social media. Paul, who employs three workers after … [Read more...] about Google Street View car captures ‘axe murder’ on UK street but there’s an explanation
DAN HODGES: Downing Street’s headless chickens are flapping but we need leaders with steel in their spines
A statue of Margaret Thatcher was erected in her home town of Grantham last Sunday. Within two hours, the deputy director of an arts centre at the University of Leicester had showered it in yolk. Soon after, an enterprising journalist set up a nearby egg stall. Local residents drifted by, expressing a mix of admiration and concern, while a council CCTV camera kept a beady eye on proceedings. The minor flurry of excitement over the belated unveiling of a monument to Britain’s most transformative and divisive peacetime Prime Minister will fade over the coming days. But after the vandals, hawkers and gawkers have moved on, it might be an idea for a couple of other people to take a quick trip up the A1 to pay their respects. And reflect. The time has come for the headless chickens – in No 10, No 11 and on the Tory backbenches – to stop flapping. They need to get a grip. And they need to start taking the hard but necessary decisions to get the cost-of-living crisis under … [Read more...] about DAN HODGES: Downing Street’s headless chickens are flapping but we need leaders with steel in their spines
Charles Leclerc takes pole for Spanish GP while Lewis Hamilton will start in SIXTH behind Mercedes team-mate
CHARLES LECLERC took pole for tomorrow's Spanish Grand Prix with a last-gasp flying lap. Max Verstappen had set a provisional pole time with a cracking first run while championship leader Leclerc spun on his maiden attempt. But the Ferrari man made up for it on his second attempt with a blistering run that eventually proved to be 0.323 quicker than the Red Bull man, who did have some power problems. Carlos Sainz qualified in third place as he strung together some clean laps while Mercedes were encouraged by George Russell 's fourth place start. The Silver Arrows had looked much-improved after a terrible start to the season and Russell's performance, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton starting in sixth behind Sergio Perez, will give them more reasons to feel optimistic. Meanwhile, Haas were left delighted after both Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher reached the top 10 - despite the team bringing no upgrades to this race. Davos is back and the world has changed. Have the global elite noticed?
Davos, Switzerland (CNN Business) The last time top politicians, CEOs and billionaires gathered in a Swiss mountain village to discuss society's biggest problems and pitch their solutions, the coronavirus outbreak in China was little more than a remote threat. The economy was humming , and a major armed conflict in Europe was on nobody's list of major risks. More than two years later, the world has been upended by the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But for the rich and powerful arriving in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum, very little has changed. "Davos is the epitome of one of the greatest challenges to society right now, which is self-congratulatory elites," said Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a Yale management professor who speaks regularly with many well-known executives. The conference — which famously combines high-minded panels with flashy parties — aims to bring important people together to tackle pressing issues like … [Read more...] about Davos is back and the world has changed. Misery for drivers as ULEZ could be EXTENDED even further and cover whole of London under new plans
DRIVERS in London face fresh misery after it was revealed the city's much-loathed Ultra Low Emission Zone could soon be extended to every street. Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared war on motorists , insisting the capital needs to charge whopping fees so it hits climate-change targets. Under his plans, the scheme's boundary could be extended from the North and South Circular Roads to the whole of Greater London from August 29 next year. Drivers who don't comply with minimum emissions standards are charged a daily fee of £12.50 for entering the zone. That's separate from the £15 congestion charge , which must also be paid daily for vehicles travelling through the city centre. Analysis by the PA news agency found that more than 3.5million more people will live within the zone if it is expanded as planned. Read more on Motors RIGHT LIGHT? ‘He f***ed with me’ – Mike Tyson opens up on plane attack and reveals his wife hates him flying with public
MIKE TYSON has broken his silence on his mile-high melee and insisted he shouldn't "even be taking public planes". Tyson, 55, repeatedly punched Melvin George Townsend III on a JetBlue flight last month but escaped criminal charges. The San Mateo County District Attorney opted not to slap the boxing legend with any charges due to video footage of Townsend goading the former undisputed heavyweight champion. Iron Mike recalled the incident during a recent episode of his podcast , saying: "Yes, they said they ain't gonna pick up charges. "He was f*****g with me. I took pictures with this n****. I shouldn't even be taking public planes." Tyson's wife Lakiha Spencer - whom he has two children with - isn't a fan of him flying on commercial flights.
