Atlantic City casino smoking ban bill to get Feb. 13 hearing
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey lawmakers will soon discuss a proposed law that would ban smoking in Atlantic City's casinos, the first action in nearly three years on an emotional issue that is dividing casino patrons and sickening some workers. The state Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee will hold a hearing Feb. 13 in Trenton to discuss the bill, but does not plan to vote on it that day, according to Sen. Joseph Vitale, one of the measure's sponsors. The bill would close a loophole in New Jersey's 2006 indoor smoking law that exempts casinos. Currently, smoking is allowed on up to 25% of the casino floor. Similar pushes to end casino smoking are being waged by employees in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Many casino workers have been pushing for years for a total ban on casino smoking, saying the secondhand smoke is making them ill. The casinos fear a total smoking ban would cost the industry revenue and jobs, although smoking … [Read more...] about Atlantic City casino smoking ban bill to get Feb. 13 hearing
Joe Schoen & Saquon Barkley’s reps still trying to ‘move closer’ as Daniel Jones negotiations lurk
MOBILE — Giants GM Joe Schoen revisited contract talks with Saquon Barkley’s agents early this week and said they will keep working to “move closer” on the running back’s value. “We had some initial talks earlier this week with his representatives, so when I get back in the office next week, we’ll continue to have conversations with them,” Schoen said at the Senior Bowl. “With any negotiation, you just gotta move closer, and that’s what we’ll try to do next week.” Schoen also said “we haven’t started conversations” with quarterback Daniel Jones’ representatives but reiterated “we want Daniel back.” When asked if he wants to sign Jones long-term, Schoen said both the Giants and Jones’ camp needed to present their initial numbers before he can discuss that. “Once we get into it, in terms of years, contract structure, finances — I’m not really sure where they’re gonna be or what they’re gonna be asking for,” Schoen said. “We’re still working on where we’d be willing to start. … [Read more...] about Joe Schoen & Saquon Barkley’s reps still trying to ‘move closer’ as Daniel Jones negotiations lurk
‘Matter of time’ before scoring record falls — LBJ
James needs 89 more points to eclipse Abdul-Jabbar's long-standing record NEW YORK — LeBron James said on Tuesday it's only a "matter of time" before he passes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the greatest scorer in NBA history after edging closer to the long-standing NBA record. James' 28-point triple-double in the Los Angeles Lakers' win over the New York Knicks means the 38-year-old superstar needs just 89 more points to eclipse Abdul-Jabbar's mark of 38,387. At his current rate of scoring, James is on target to pass Abdul-Jabbar next Tuesday when the Lakers host the Oklahoma City Thunder. James said on Tuesday, however, that the prospect of making NBA history is not weighing heavily on him as his date with destiny looms ever closer. "No, it's not getting heavier, because I'm going to do it," James told reporters. "I mean, it's just a matter of time when I'm going to do it. "I'm not going anywhere — I'm going to be in this league for at least a few more years, so I'm going to … [Read more...] about ‘Matter of time’ before scoring record falls — LBJ

How to make a mummy: Ancient Egyptian workshop has new clues
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 NEW YORK (AP) — For thousands of years, ancient Egyptians mummified their dead in the search for eternal life. Now, researchers have used chemistry and an unusual collection of jars to figure out how they did it. Their study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, is based on a rare archaeological find: An embalming workshop with a trove of pottery around 2,500 years old. Many jars from the site were still inscribed with instructions like “to wash” or “to put on his head.” By matching the writing on the outside of the vessels with the chemical traces inside, researchers uncovered new details about the “recipes” that helped preserve bodies for thousands of years. “It’s like a time machine, really,” said Joann Fletcher, an archaeologist at University of York who was not involved with the study. “It’s allowed us to not quite see over the shoulders of the ancient embalmers, … [Read more...] about How to make a mummy: Ancient Egyptian workshop has new clues
