The combination of the Patriots possibly needing a boost on offense, combined with what could be an itch to return on the part of the Big Fella, likely served as a partial catalyst to reignite the rumor. (I can’t imagine what Bill Belichick must think when he hears quotes like this from the owner.) Gronkowski doesn’t owe anything to anyone -- I’d love to be able to see him walk at the age of 45 -- but if he wants to return, the Pats would love to have him back. I know others have discussed this before, but I fiurmly believe there’s one guy who could bring him back -- if Brady puts the full-court press on him, then, that would be a game-changer. Can you imagine him returning for, say, the game against the Chiefs? 7:22 p.m.: 7:19 p.m.: Not a lot of action on the line in the … [Read more...] about Countdown to Kickoff: Giants at Patriots, 8:20 p.m.
Giants vs patriots super bowl
Thirty-five thoughts on the Patriots’ 35-14 victory over the Giants … 1. I suppose a game in which you win by 21 points and still come away annoyed at how it played out is a sign that you have a very good football team. And the Patriots, now 6-0, do. The defense is spectacular, their special teams put points on the board when the offense was struggling to do it, and Tom Brady and Julian Edelman – with help from unexpected places – finally found their mojo in the second half. 2. But man, that was an annoying game for a long time. Frustrating. Briefly worrisome. The Giants were without arguably their three best offensive players, Daniel Jones (15 of 31, 161 yards, one TD, three interceptions) looked like a bewildered rookie, and yet the Giants – a team the Patriots always want to maul under any circumstances – managed to hang around even into the fourth quarter. 3. The Patriots were so disjointed in the first half that one couldn’t help but … [Read more...] about 35 thoughts on the Patriots’ disjointed win over the Giants
COMMENTARY Give Gronk this; he’ll probably be better than Dan Marino ever was. Still, Patriot fans hoping to witness Rob Gronkowski at his most unfiltered in his new role as Fox football analyst would be privy to tune in right out of the gate. After Thursday night’s debut, it is anybody’s guess how quickly the muzzle comes down from the execs in Hollywood or Park Ave. OK, so maybe it won’t exactly be a gag order, as even the stiffest of suits has to understand Gronkowski’s appeal to its football audience, whether it bleeds Patriot colors or not. But it stands to reason that after Gronkowski likely stumbles his way through his debut prior to Thursday’s Giants-Patriots tilt, there’s due to be some “grooming.” Think “My Fair Lady,” Gronk-style. The network would even be wise to consider putting that transformational process together as its own programming. Either way, Gronkowski’s tenure with Fox has the chance to be … [Read more...] about What experts are predicting for Thursday’s Patriots-Giants game
11:10 p.m.: So that might define “finishing on an up note.” Brady pushed forward for his second touchdown of the night to make it 35-14 with 3:49 to go in regulation. A good drive for New England, one the offense can theoretically build on going forward. 11:00 p.m.: The Patriots will get the ball back here as we pass the midway point of the fourth quarter. Let’s see if the offense can end the evening on a positive note. The numbers don’t really tell the whole story, but Brady is 29-for-39 for 291 yards with an interception as we come down the stretch. The truth of the matter is the offense has been inconsistent all night long. Of course, the flip side is that the defense and punt block group has been nails again. 10:53 p.m.: And again, the defense comes up big. This time it was Jamie Collins who forced the fumble (yet another highlight for his Defensive Player of the Year candidacy), and Kyle Van Noy took it all the way back for what looked like a touchdown. If … [Read more...] about Live blog: Patriots (35), Giants (14)
COMMENTARY Five takeaways from the Patriots’ 35-14 win over the Giants, which moves Bill Belichick’s team to 6-0 on the season … CLOSER THAN IT SHOULD’VE BEEN The Giants calling timeout with 2:40 to play in the first half, with the Patriots facing a manageable third down near midfield, said a lot about the state of New England’s offense. At that stage, New York had confidence it could thwart a conversion — and if not, that they’d quell the drive soon after. To that point, the Pats had held the ball for almost 34 of the game’s 51 minutes, or twice as long as the Giants. They’d intercepted Daniel Jones three times, and allowed the Giants to convert on only two third downs. They’d opened the scoring for the evening by returning a blocked punt for a touchdown. And yet their lead was just 21-14. Kyle Van Noy’s 22-yard fumble return padded that by seven more points on the possession that followed, and so in the end the … [Read more...] about 5 takeaways from the Patriots’ 35-14 win over the Giants
