It’s difficult to fathom how the Colorado River could possibly carve the mile-deep chasm that is the Grand Canyon. But if one thinks of the river as a flume of liquid sandpaper rubbing the land over millions of years, it begins to make sense. “The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools,” Henry David Thoreau wrote, “but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time.” In 1963, humans stopped time, when the brand new Glen Canyon Dam on the Utah-Arizona border cut off the reddish sediment that naturally eroded the Grand Canyon. Today the river runs vodka clear from the base of the dam. A map showing how Lake Powell has shrunk since 2000. It thrives in warm conditions and spreads through the air as mould spores. Humidity inside homes may also be higher this year from drying washing naturally to avoid using a costly tumble dryer. Liz Weston: Should you rent in retirement?
Some people rent in retirement because they don’t have much choice; they can’t afford to own homes. But financial planners say renting can make more sense than owning in some circumstances, even for retirees who can afford the costs of homeownership. Renting offers flexibility as well as freedom from all the chores and expenses of maintaining a home. Renting also may provide built-in communities for socializing, as well as accessible housing features such as one-floor living, which can help people age in place. People who are “house rich and cash poor” can sell their homes and use the equity to fund a more comfortable lifestyle. “While retirees often don’t want to rent, it can be a smarter decision for a number of reasons,” says certified financial planner Lisa A.K. Kirchenbauer of Arlington, Virginia. CONSIDER RENTING IF YOU’RE IN TRANSITION If you’re moving to a new area, financial planners often recommend renting first to get a better feel for the advantages and … [Read more...] about Liz Weston: Should you rent in retirement?
Villar promises all Maharlika fund documents will be open to public
MANILA, Philippines — As he sponsored a tweaked version of the controversial Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) bill at the Senate plenary, Senator Mark Villar on Monday made a firm promise that all of the documents related to the fund will be “open, available and accessible to the public” in the spirit of transparency. Villar, head of the chamber’s panel on banks, financial institutions and currencies, detailed the oversight measures set in place “to ensure accountability and proper governance of the fund.” READ: Mark Villar files Maharlika Investment Fund bill at Senate Among these include having an internal auditor to provide interim financial and management reports, enjoining an internationally recognized auditing firm to serve as an external auditor to audit the MIF financial statements, and subjecting the fund’s books and accounts to the “strict examination” of the Commission on Audit. Villar said a joint Congressional oversight panel would likewise be formed with five … [Read more...] about Villar promises all Maharlika fund documents will be open to public
A Campaign to Remind Us That We Love New York (City)
Good morning. It’s Monday. We’ll get a preview of a new campaign to boost New York that has a back-to-the-future ring. I ♥ NY caught on as an icon and a catchphrase in the late 1970s, when New York seemed to be descending to new depths. The city had scraped through a fiscal crisis — barely. The “Son of Sam” killer had terrified New Yorkers. The sentence “ Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning ” had disturbed them. This morning, a coalition of elected officials and “community partners” will introduce a new campaign with the mark (as such things are called in advertising and marketing) We ♥ NYC. The people who came up with We ♥ NYC say it is a mark for a different time. But they see parallels to the troubled era that gave rise to I ♥ NY. “We’re hopefully going to be able to cut through divisiveness and negativity” that accompanied the pandemic, said Kathryn Wylde, the president and chief executive of the Partnership for New York City , a consortium of … [Read more...] about A Campaign to Remind Us That We Love New York (City)
England unfit for purpose of competing for Six Nations glory admits Steve Borthwick
Steve Borthwick has admitted England were unfit for the purpose of competing for Six Nations glory. They avoided annihilation at the Aviva, a notable improvement on France the week before, pushing the world’s top side hard for an hour. But England still finished with a losing record for the third straight championship - a hat-trick of humiliation for rugby’s best resourced nation. The head coach made no attempt to sugarcoat the facts, running a mile from blaming defeat on Freddie Steward’s contentious first half red card. Instead, he pointed to fitness levels, leaving the players in no doubt he expects a marked improvement before they reassemble to prepare for the World Cup. “We have to make sure we get the condition of the players right,” he said. “We don’t want to spend the World Cup camp trying to get fit. We want to use it to get better.” Freddie Steward is controversially sent off in first-half by referee Jaco Peyper ( Image: David Rogers/Getty Images) … [Read more...] about England unfit for purpose of competing for Six Nations glory admits Steve Borthwick
