AURORA – With one of the state’s best players and two highly-touted freshmen, Smoky Hill’s window to win its first boys basketball crown is wide open. The Buffaloes have yet to lose in the state of Colorado behind the play of senior Rickey Mitchell Jr., who leads Class 6A at 26.6 points per game. And beyond Mitchell, Smoky Hill features towering freshmen Kai McGrew (6-foot-8) and Carter Basquez (6-5), both of whom are already drawing Division I interest. Consider it a reloaded cupboard after the Buffaloes lost seven of their top eight varsity players to the prep school scene during the pandemic-affected 2020 season. “We got hit by the prep movement hard in 2020,” Smoky Hill head coach Anthony Hardin said. “People don’t know, because we took it in stride and found a way to be competitive (at 10-6), even though we lost the majority of our guys. The suspect in a hit-and-run crash in South Los Angeles that killed a 13-year-old boy and his baby brother has been arrested and charged with murder, police announced Thursday, capping a weeks-long investigation that spanned two states. The crash occurred Jan. 9 after the driver of a Mercedes-Benz blew through a red light at Main Street and 111th Place in Broadway-Manchester, smashing into the car driven by Deborah Amaya, who was taking her children to their grandmother, police said. The collision resulted in the death of her two sons, Christopher Amaya-Pineda, 13, and Damian Amaya-Pineda , 18 months. “My kids were everything,” Deborah Amaya told reporters Thursday. “There wasn’t a day I didn’t remind them they were everything to me. Prominent British female Olympians have joined a revolt against controversial new plans that could mean they have to race transgender women in future. Established Team GB stars Beth Dobbin and Emily Diamond, as well as up and coming runner Ellie Baker, have now all said women should not be expected to compete against transgender athletes due to biological advantages. World Athletics has begun to consult its member federations over a proposed rule change that would increase restrictions on trans women but not ban them completely, The Telegraph reported last week.
