Sharing Stories, and a View, Aboard the California Zephyr
I woke up around 5 a.m. to a low but incessant rumbling. Faint hints of daylight had appeared over my fellow passengers’ heads, most of which were still bent in rest. Some people yawned; others stared intently out the window at the valley. I had been aboard the train for about 40 hours, and there was still a long way to go before our scheduled arrival in the San Francisco Bay area. Riding westbound, I walked to the back of the train to see the rising sun reflected on the tracks. We were passing through Nevada. A few minutes later we stopped in the city of Winnemucca, Nev., right in front of the Martin Hotel, which, at the end of the 19th century, catered to the Basque immigrants who’d moved there to work as shepherds. Amtrak’s California Zephyr, considered by many rail enthusiasts to be among the most scenic long-distance train routes in the United States, operates between Chicago and Emeryville, Calif., near Oakland. The entire route takes some 52 hours and includes 33 … [Read more...] about Sharing Stories, and a View, Aboard the California Zephyr
The world’s cornhole elite, chasing that one perfect toss
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 ROCK HILL, S.C. - The surface of a professional-grade cornhole board - two feet wide and four feet long, give or take a quarter-inch, and made of birch or oak with a polyurethane finish - can change texture with the temperature. On a hot day, even indoors, the clear varnish can get tacky, slowing bean bags down as they slide toward the 6-inch scoring hole. Near an air-conditioning vent, boards "play faster." Further away they get stickier. Which is why, here at last week's American Cornhole League world championships, held in a massive indoor sports facility in humid South Carolina, Corey Gilbert, 33, has opted for the "Sniper" set from his sponsor, Lucky Bags. It's a middle-of-the-spectrum, Goldilocks option - not the firmest or the floppiest, neither the silkiest nor the craggiest, but it will slide comfortably on the boards, which have been playing … [Read more...] about The world’s cornhole elite, chasing that one perfect toss
Taxpayers for U.S. Chips
The United States has authorized $280 billion in taxpayer money to subsidize rich computer chip companies and invest in technology research for the sake of keeping America strong and innovative. President Biden on Tuesday signed the law, officially known as the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, calling it “an investment in America itself.” If this law does what its many backers in government and private industry hope, the U.S. will have more control over the future of essential computer chips and have a hedge if China grows more hostile toward Taiwan, a U.S. ally. The law also aims to keep America on the cutting edge of technology by putting more government support into research. Here is why the law exists and what it could, and could not, do to help America: The dream of U.S.-made chips: The law authorizes more than $52 billion to help companies pay for building or expanding American computer chip factories and for research and worker training. In short, American … [Read more...] about Taxpayers for U.S. Chips
