Businessman who created betting safety app is now helping young entrepreneurs – in Rwanda
A young business entrepreneur from Sheffield who recently sold his betting safety app to one of the largest international gambling consultancies has now set his sights on helping youngsters – in Rwanda. Adam Bradford was just 21 years old when he and his family received the shocking news that his father was going to jail – after stealing £50,000 from his employers to feed his gambling addiction. Adam, now 30, made it his mission to pay back every penny of his father's secret £500,000 gambling debts – and subsequently set up betting safety app, BetProtect, to help others going through similar, betting-related financial hardships. After establishing his app, Adam went on to help other like-minded young people follow in his footsteps and become successful business owners. Last year, he sold BetProtect to international responsible gambling body, Crucial Compliance – and now, he has moved over 6,000 miles away, to land-locked Rwanda in central Africa, to continue his philanthropic … [Read more...] about Businessman who created betting safety app is now helping young entrepreneurs – in Rwanda

Crypto Wants Its Shine Back
At a cryptocurrency conference in Denver this month, a group of singers clad in bright orange onesies took the stage to perform what one industry website later described as an anthem for the crypto faithful, a “blockchain ‘Blowin’ in the Wind.’” The chorus was a list of crypto’s most notorious villains, from the trash-talking entrepreneur Do Kwon to the disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried , punctuated by four-letter expletives. “In the next bull market, we promise not to use,” the song continued, “centralized exchanges run by these toxic dudes.” After a disastrous 2022, when a procession of prominent crypto firms imploded, the industry is angling for an audacious rebrand. Executives like Mr. Kwon and Mr. Bankman-Fried — once beloved crypto celebrities, with hundreds of thousands of devotees hanging on their every tweet — are now personae non gratae. Their former admirers argue that these crypto villains never truly embodied the industry’s core values, even before … [Read more...] about Crypto Wants Its Shine Back
Emission Trading Programs Struggle to Find Traction
Does Russia hold hostage the future of a carbon cap-and-trade system that many experts see as a critical tool for curbing global warming gases? Improbable as it may seem, the answer appears to be yes. That is because Russia, as a result of the collapse of much of its heavy industry in the 1990s, owns one of the world’s largest stocks of credits to offset carbon emissions. The unearned windfall, a legacy of the Kyoto Protocol that was the world’s first attempt to come to grips with the threat of climate change, is worth several billion dollars. If abruptly sold abroad, those credits could send the price of carbon on the world’s fragile emissions markets plunging toward zero. Without a predictable and reasonably high price for carbon emissions, most economists say, there is little prospect of setting in motion the many investments needed to shift from a carbon-intensive industrial economy to a more sustainable energy base in developed and developing countries alike. Researchers: Inbreeding a big problem for endangered orcas
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SEATTLE (AP) — People have taken many steps in recent decades to help the Pacific Northwest's endangered killer whales, which have long suffered from starvation, pollution and the legacy of having many of their number captured for display in marine parks. They've breached dikes and removed dams to create wetland habitat for Chinook salmon, the orcas' most important food. They’ve limited commercial fishing to try to ensure prey for the whales. They've made boats slow down and keep farther away from the animals to reduce their stress and to quiet the waters so they can better hunt. So far, those efforts have had limited success, and research published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution suggests why: The whales are so inbred that they are dying younger and their population is not recovering. Female killer whales take about 20 years to reach peak fertility, … [Read more...] about Researchers: Inbreeding a big problem for endangered orcas
