I know it has been almost a year since my last life update – but worry not, things have been happening at quite ‘the speed’ around here. I was glad to see the end of 2018 – it definitely wasn’t our year, but as I keep telling my husband Simon, we are both here to tell the story, and that is what matters. We get so many messages asking us both about Simon following his prostate cancer (he had a radical prostectomy in January 2018) and we cannot thank you all enough. And I mean it – every message has mattered and they really kept us going. If anything, it helps us feel less alone … [Read more...] about Life Update February 2019
Great 40th birthday trips
“WE’LL get a villa”, I babbled excitedly to my husband. “We’ll get a villa for two weeks, we’ll hire a car, we’ll have pool parties, barbecues and long leisurely lunches...” Billie Faiers is a bride gone wild at booze-fuelled pool party on Ibiza hen do And then I stopped. As usual, I hadn’t thought this through at all. We were planning to return to Ibiza after a magical child-free weekend last year for my 40th birthday. But this time there was a catch - we were to take our two and five-year-old daughters and see if we could have as much fun with them as we did without. And what makes a happy family? A lot of the time - it’s a happy mummy. Did mummy really want to be cooking, doing big shops, clearing up the villa, making beds, washing up and driving? And would it actually be really nice if someone else occasionally entertained my children while I helped myself to food and drink someone else had prepared? Absolutely yes. So it … [Read more...] about Discover family fun, activities for the kids, beaches and pools in Ibiza on a fun summer holiday
Regular readers will know that beautiful hotels are my passion and looking back on the year I can’t believe some of the incredible and unique properties that I’ve stayed in. I love keeping a record of them on this blog so here are my top 20 hotels of the year by category. Beach in Reach 1. Amanzoe, Porto Heli, Greece The Aman brand is renowned for excellence in every way and Amanzoe in Porto Heli, Greece is no exception. We had the most exquisite room, surrounded by incredible architecture, beautiful views, amazing and varied food and of course the most excellent service. The Beach Club at the hotel was our favourite place to hang out, eat mussels, drink rosé and enjoy the gorgeous view of the sea. 2. Il San Pietro Di Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy I bandy around the phrase ‘my favourite hotel ever’ far too often but honestly Il San Pietro di Positano on Italy’s Amalfi Coast is the place I can imagine myself relaxing aged 75 with Mr S beside me … [Read more...] about My Top 20 Hotels of 2018

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a British family in possession of a bit of spare time and cash must be in want of a weekend break. But where should they go? Whether for a big group celebration or a mid-term escape en famille, the tens of thousands of choices are overwhelming. And what constitutes “the perfect cottage house for families”, anyhow? There are lots of thoughtfully designed properties on the higher end of the market that cater beautifully to groups with young children. On a hill overlooking the sea in St Mawes you’ll find the stunning Penolva, which sleeps eight and where you’ll find dressing up outfits in the children’s closets and myriad rockpools to explore. At The Freeth, in Herefordshire, there’s a giant playroom tucked away upstairs for children to have hours of fun. The Wow House Company offers plenty of piles, from baronial to bling, which would suit a big birthday or any other showy event. Location helps, certainly, … [Read more...] about Is this Britain’s best holiday cottage for families with young children?
