Homeless families living in vehicles are filling this quiet S.F. neighborhood. Here’s how the city wants to help them
San Francisco officials are pushing to open a “safe parking” site for at least 50 homeless households living in their vehicles on the streets surrounding Lake Merced. Over the last few years, the neighborhood has become one of the hotspots for people living in RVs, vans and cars. The Portola, Balboa Park and the Bayview have also grappled with the problem as the housing crisis has pushed struggling residents to the edge of the city. Supervisor Myrna Melgar, who represents the district, said the city has narrowed a list of sites to two that are “strong possibilities,” but declined to share exact locations, saying she “didn’t want to get people riled up” when the plan is in the early stages. The site is likely to face community pushback in the quiet district with few homeless services near Stonestown Galleria shopping center, golf courses and S.F. State. It would be the third site opened by the city where unhoused residents can park and access services. One opened near the Balboa … [Read more...] about Homeless families living in vehicles are filling this quiet S.F. neighborhood. Here’s how the city wants to help them

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster this week signed a bill banning transgender athletes from playing school sports that match their gender identity, joining a number of Republican-led states that have enacted similar laws this year.
