It is a truth universally acknowledged that a British family in possession of a bit of spare time and cash must be in want of a weekend break. But where should they go? Whether for a big group celebration or a mid-term escape en famille, the tens of thousands of choices are overwhelming. And what constitutes “the perfect cottage house for families”, anyhow? There are lots of thoughtfully designed properties on the higher end of the market that cater beautifully to groups with young children. On a hill overlooking the sea in St Mawes you’ll find the stunning Penolva, which sleeps eight and where you’ll find dressing up outfits in the children’s closets and myriad rockpools to explore. At The Freeth, in Herefordshire, there’s a giant playroom tucked away upstairs for children to have hours of fun. Holiday with young children
By Martin Snapp | Columnist PUBLISHED: November 15, 2018 at 5:00 am | UPDATED: November 15, 2018 at 5:18 am Have you seen the new entrance to Children’s Fairyland? It’s gorgeous! Also imaginative, delightful and totally charming. I don’t know what I like most — the whimsical banisters that curl their way up the path, the enormous 16-foot-long giant’s footprints or the fact that, at long last, you can finally see the huge topiary dragon that has been there all along but couldn’t be seen because it was blocked by overgrown foliage. Finally, for the first time since the park opened in 1950, you can see the entrance from the street — a grand entrance for a grand place on Grand Avenue. Fairyland has been closed this week because management didn’t want to risk exposing kids to the smoke in the air from those terrible fires up north. But they think they’ll be able to open again by Friday. If you plan to go this weekend, call … [Read more...] about Snapp Shots: Holidays coming to Children’s Fairyland in Oakland
HOLIDAYS used to be so simple – two weeks on a sun lounger, with the toughest decision being which drink to choose or book to read. Then along come children and turn every idea you ever had about relaxing upside-down. Airports become a daunting assault course and meal times turn into a trial of strength — survived only by those with extremely high pain thresholds. The idea of a family holiday abroad is appealing in theory. But the reality can be exhaustingly different. Here is where the Tots To Travel Green Garden resort in Tenerife’s Playa de las Americas comes in — allowing you to enjoy quality family time by taking away the stress of travelling with your youngsters. The resort is beautifully thought out and clearly designed BY parents, FOR parents. After an early-morning flight with our daughter Romy, five, and six-month-old son George, my wife and I were feeling a little care-worn. But thankfully that feeling soon disappeared after a 15-minute journey from … [Read more...] about Take the stress out of travelling with the kids and head to Tenerife for your next summer hol
Parents with toddlers can be reluctant to embark on long-haul winter sun trips. But here’s the spoiler: this is the best time in your parenting life to board a plane. If your child is under two, you’ll save on the tickets; there’s no school schedule to contend with, so here’s a chance to save again; and they’re in a regular napping schedule anyhow, so what’s a time zone or two? And finally, everyone - whether 2 or 22 or 42 - is scientifically proven to be more relaxed by the beach. In order to relax properly, of course, you will need to feel confident that your child is playing in a safe environment. So proximity to a gently shelving beach, with amenities and good hospitals close by, is required. You want to be in a zika-free zone if you’re thinking about another child but if you’re not, then the Caribbean and lots of other places are tempting (for the latest zika advice, see here). Some destinations are better than others for families … [Read more...] about Mauritius or the Maldives? The best winter sun destinations for families with young children
HAVING children means everyday tasks take up to TWICE as long, a study has found. A poll of 2,000 Brits found getting ready and leaving the house in the morning takes 45 minutes for people with a child, compared to just 22 minutes for childless adults. And the more children you have, the longer it takes – an average breakfast takes 24 minutes for those with three kids but just 18 minutes for one child families. Doing the food shop will take 30 minutes longer with the kids in tow while shopping for clothes and shoes will also need an extra half an hour than if you were on your own. Packing for a holiday or trip away, cleaning the house and meal times are also among the daily tasks which will take longer once you have children. Simon Wilson, Head of Buying at Deichmann Shoes, which commissioned the research, said: “I think all parents out there will agree that having kids is really rewarding. “But simple tasks that you didn’t even think about before – such … [Read more...] about Everyday tasks take TWICE as long for parents with young kids
