Published 6:22 PM EDT Apr 7, 2019 U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position and Kevin McAleenan, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol commissioner, will become acting secretary, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter. “I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!” Trump tweeted. Nielsen’s departure comes after Trump renewed his public expressions of frustration about security at the U.S. southern border, including during a visit to California on Friday in which he declared the U.S. “full” and unable to accommodate any more migrants from Latin America. On Friday, Trump withdrew his nominee to run Immigration and Customs Enforcement to appoint someone “different” and “tougher.” “We’re going in a tougher direction. We want to go in a tougher direction,” Trump said Friday of Ronald Vitiello, the acting director of the … [Read more...] about Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen to resign
Homeland security secretary
Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary of Homeland Security, put down her pen and headphones then stood and hugged the officials from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras she had just listened to, thanking them for their work on what she hailed as a “historic” pact to target unauthorized migration.Within hours, President Trump had accused the Northern Triangle countries of doing “nothing,” and threatened not to only cancel aid to all three, but to close the U.S.-Mexico border entirely.“We’re not paying them anymore because they haven’t done a thing for us,” Trump declared. For Nielsen, that incident last week was only the latest example of being publicly undercut by the president. Fifteen months into her tenure as head of the government’s third-largest department, Nielsen embodies a paradox: She has succeeded in holding onto her job, defying numerous reports that Trump had decided to fire her, but has done so by becoming the public face of … [Read more...] about Kirstjen Nielsen has hung on as Homeland Security secretary, but at what price?
Associated Press Published 1:06 PM EST Nov 13, 2018 Washington -- President Donald Trump has soured on Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and she is expected to leave her job, perhaps as soon as this week, according to two people with knowledge of the issue. Trump has blamed Nielsen for not doing more to address what he has called a crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, the sources said. Curbing immigration is Trump’s signature issue – and one he returns to as a way to rally his most loyal supporters. But anyone who takes over at Homeland Security is likely to run up against the same problems that Nielsen faced. The administration has already tried to clamp down at the border but those efforts have been largely thwarted or watered down due to legal challenges. Nielsen had hoped to complete one year in the job and leave in December, but it appeared unlikely she would last that long, said two sources. Both people who had knowledge of the debate spoke to the AP … [Read more...] about Homeland Security secretary expected to leave
Bloomberg News Published 8:25 AM EST Nov 13, 2018 U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen may be removed by President Donald Trump in the near future, the Washington Post reported Monday night. The Post, citing five unnamed sources, said that Trump has been unhappy with Nielsen’s performance and canceled a planned visit to U.S. armed forces at the border with Mexico. Homeland Security is responsible for protecting the country’s borders and enforcing immigration laws. Trump has told advisers that he wants to replace Nielsen, according to the Post, and that she may leave office in the coming weeks, or perhaps much sooner. Trump brought the immigration issue into sharp focus in the weeks before the midterm elections, warning about a large group of migrants from Central America who are making their way through Mexico to the southern border of the U.S. The report comes less than a week after Trump ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Asked for comment on the … [Read more...] about WP: Trump preparing to oust Homeland Security Secretary
