The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in morning trading. It’s coming off its first back-to-back gain in two weeks, before the second- and third-largest U.S. bank failures in history threw the industry into turmoil. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was virtually flat at 32,561 points, as of 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was also basically unchanged. Markets are waiting for the Fed, which is stuck with a difficult decision: whether to keep hiking interest rates to drive down inflation or to ease off the increases given the pain it’s already caused for banks, which could drag down the rest of the economy. A few weeks ago, much of Wall Street was convinced … [Read more...] about Wall Street holds steady ahead of Fed decision on rates

Hong Kong’s New Kids on the Block
HONG KONG — The art scene here was largely closed off to the world for three years, but the city’s self-imposed pandemic isolation has been an unexpected boon to the local art scene. There has been soul-searching, and freshness injected with the addition of some radical (for this city) young newcomers. At No. 3 Staunton Street in the city’s SoHo district, the roughly 1,300 square-foot ground floor was once used as a parking space for a Ferrari. Now it has a new purpose, as a gallery space for a new venture — the Young Soy Gallery . “Young Soy” is Cantonese slang for ugly, and the “ugly” gallery is determined to shake up the conservative local art scene. The gallery’s strong mission statement, or manifesto , is to be inclusive, unconventional in their approach, and to cultivate artists with potential to claim a position in art history. They see the artists whose work they show as “philosophers, educators, rebels, visionaries, perhaps even degenerates.” As Hong Kong continues … [Read more...] about Hong Kong’s New Kids on the Block
Trump’s potential indictment caps decades of legal scrutiny
By JILL COLVIN (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — For 40 years, former President Donald Trump has navigated countless legal investigations without ever facing criminal charges. That record may soon come to an end. Trump could be indicted by a Manhattan grand jury as soon as this week, potentially charged with falsifying business records connected to hush money payments during his 2016 campaign to women who accused him of sexual encounters. It’s one of several investigations that have intensified as Trump mounts his third presidential run. He has denied any allegations of wrongdoing and accuses prosecutors of engaging in a politically motivated “witch hunt” to damage his campaign. An indictment in New York would mark an extraordinary turn in American history, making Trump the first former president to face a criminal charge. And it would carry tremendous weight for Trump himself, threatening his long-established ability to avoid consequences despite entanglement in a … [Read more...] about Trump’s potential indictment caps decades of legal scrutiny
In Hong Kong, a New Exhibit Creates a ‘Space for People to Feel’
HONG KONG — Michele Chu has always been interested in exploring the intimacy between strangers. She has built art installations with fabric barriers and designed social experiments eliciting public participation, and intended to base her upcoming exhibition at the contemporary gallery PHD Group — her debut solo show — on the cleansing rituals at a bathhouse. But the work became more raw and personal when, a few months ago, her mother applied to receive euthanasia after a protracted battle with cancer. The exhibit, “ You, Trickling ,” is about anticipating the loss of a maternal figure. It also explores how rituals and a renewed connection with one’s own body might facilitate healing. Ms. Chu brings the hot air, mist and steam reminiscent of an onsen, a Japanese communal bathhouse, into the sprawling 3,000-square-foot gallery space of PHD Group, which she divides with fabric into womblike chambers and tunnels. “On a city-level, there is an undercurrent of loss everywhere,” she … [Read more...] about In Hong Kong, a New Exhibit Creates a ‘Space for People to Feel’
John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Rather by surprise, History Colorado found itself at the center of protests against police violence and racism after Memorial Day, given its flagship museum’s location in downtown’s Civic Center Cultural Complex — just steps from the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado State Capitol. But the institution has embraced this moment in history , collecting artifacts of the protests even as dozens of volunteers worked to remove graffiti and trash from the exterior. Officials at the state’s flagship history museum are now hoping to redirect attention to what’s inside — in a socially distanced way, of course. History Colorado began unlocking its doors for in-person visits at eight museums across the state this week, including the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center (open June 15) and Fort Vasquez (in Platteville, June 17). The Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House (in Denver), El Pueblo History Museum and Trinidad History Museum all open on June 19, while … [Read more...] about John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
FILM REVIEW; Jaded Artist and Ingenue In an Arty Spider Web
See the article in its original context from June 12, 1998 Section Page Buy Reprints View on timesmachine TimesMachine is an exclusive benefit for home delivery and digital subscribers. ''High Art'' is an attention-getting debut feature by Lisa Cholodenko, the rare filmmaker to acknowledge Calvin Klein ads as part of her creative inspiration. She mentions the ads for their subtext rather than their style. Interested in the collision between naturalistic, highly personal photography and cool commerce, she makes her film's main character a once-celebrated photographer named Lucy Berliner, who is played by Ally Sheedy in a fierce, tricky performance that is the film's strongest element. Spooked by fame, Lucy long ago retreated from the art world to live a reclusive, druggy life in an apartment that has become a louche mecca for her lesbian friends. The uninspired plot device of a plumbing emergency brings baby-faced Syd (Radha Mitchell) into Lucy's spider web. It … [Read more...] about FILM REVIEW; Jaded Artist and Ingenue In an Arty Spider Web
