Legendary Noughties indie band unrecognisable as they respond in very clever way to viral TikTok of their huge hit
INDIE legends The Kooks have won the internet after responding to a viral TikTok cover of their biggest hit in the best way. The group, who shot to fame in 2006 with their song Naive, edited themselves into a clip of musician and Kooks fan Calum Bowie performing their song on a rainy day in Edinburgh. The original video saw Calum, with an acoustic guitar in hand, gratefully receiving a scrunched up £20 from a passerby who was impressed by his version of the song. He repeatedly told the kind person that he wasn't actually busking and that they didn't need to give him anything, but the fan wouldn't take no for an answer. Getting the note to Calum, who was stood above street level, proved tricky, and it took numerous attempts before he caught the money. He shared his appreciation by launching back into the song with a big smile on his face. Pioneer of gospel music rediscovered in Pittsburgh archives
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 18 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Scattered in crates, dirty and difficult to read, the gospel music of composer Charles Henry Pace sat packed away, unorganized — and unrealized — for more than 20 years. Frances Pace Barnes, the pioneering music publisher’s daughter who remembers how he could turn a hum it into a song, knew the crates held pieces of her family’s past. But she was not expecting those decaying printing plates and papers to reveal an important part of gospel music history. “I didn’t know it was going to be a legacy,” said Pace Barnes. As it turns out, her father was one of the first African American gospel music composers in the United States, and the owner of one of the country’s first independent, Black gospel music publishing companies. Today, the University of Pittsburgh is restoring … [Read more...] about Pioneer of gospel music rediscovered in Pittsburgh archives
FILM REVIEW; Jaded Artist and Ingenue In an Arty Spider Web
See the article in its original context from June 12, 1998 Section Page Buy Reprints View on timesmachine TimesMachine is an exclusive benefit for home delivery and digital subscribers. ''High Art'' is an attention-getting debut feature by Lisa Cholodenko, the rare filmmaker to acknowledge Calvin Klein ads as part of her creative inspiration. She mentions the ads for their subtext rather than their style. Interested in the collision between naturalistic, highly personal photography and cool commerce, she makes her film's main character a once-celebrated photographer named Lucy Berliner, who is played by Ally Sheedy in a fierce, tricky performance that is the film's strongest element. Spooked by fame, Lucy long ago retreated from the art world to live a reclusive, druggy life in an apartment that has become a louche mecca for her lesbian friends. The uninspired plot device of a plumbing emergency brings baby-faced Syd (Radha Mitchell) into Lucy's spider web. It … [Read more...] about FILM REVIEW; Jaded Artist and Ingenue In an Arty Spider Web
A Stage Adaptation of ‘Smash’ Is Setting Its Sights on Broadway
A long-discussed stage musical version of the television series “Smash” is finally coming to Broadway … but fans are going to have to wait a bit more. The adaptation’s producers, who include Steven Spielberg, announced Wednesday that they expect to bring the show to Broadway during the 2024-25 theater season. They said the musical will be directed by Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony winner whose latest endeavor, “New York, New York,” starts previews on Friday. The “Smash” musical will be based on the two-season series , broadcast on NBC in 2012 and 2013, about a group of New York City theater artists struggling to bring “Bombshell,” a musical about Marilyn Monroe, to the stage. The show, with plenty of soap-style backstage drama and exuberant production numbers, was dreamed up by Spielberg, developed by Robert Greenblatt and created by Theresa Rebeck, and, although its TV run was canceled because of declining ratings, it retains a passionate fan base. “It’s crazy that we’re … [Read more...] about A Stage Adaptation of ‘Smash’ Is Setting Its Sights on Broadway
John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Rather by surprise, History Colorado found itself at the center of protests against police violence and racism after Memorial Day, given its flagship museum’s location in downtown’s Civic Center Cultural Complex — just steps from the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado State Capitol. But the institution has embraced this moment in history , collecting artifacts of the protests even as dozens of volunteers worked to remove graffiti and trash from the exterior. Officials at the state’s flagship history museum are now hoping to redirect attention to what’s inside — in a socially distanced way, of course. History Colorado began unlocking its doors for in-person visits at eight museums across the state this week, including the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center (open June 15) and Fort Vasquez (in Platteville, June 17). The Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House (in Denver), El Pueblo History Museum and Trinidad History Museum all open on June 19, while … [Read more...] about John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
