If you’ve ever flown with the budget carrier, you know that Spirit Airlines’ baggage limit for a personal item is uniquely small. Customers who haven’t paid the mandatory fee of $35 (online) to $65 (at the gate) for a carry-on are only allowed a personal item about the size of a tote bag, day pack, or very small duffel—under 18 x 14 x 8 inches, to be exact. It’s difficult to fit everything you need for a weekend into those dimensions, but it’s not impossible; I’ve done it many times with the help of a near-maximum (or ever-so-slightly over-the-maximum) personal item like the ones below. More for Your Money: Flying with a surfboard
If you plan to fly with your favorite board to catch gnarly surf, get ready for a wild ride — financially, that is. Many airlines charge $100 or more each way to take surfboards as checked baggage. A few charge nothing. So check it out before you check it in. And be glad you’re not a professional surfer. “It’s mind-blowing how expensive it is to travel with surfboards,” said Hawaiian pro surfer Fred Patacchia Jr. “I just recently went to Europe on American Airlines and was charged $150 per board, traveling with nine boards. You do the math. The surfboard charge was more than my ticket cost.” Delta, he added, charged him $200 a board for a flight in October from Hawaii to Puerto Rico, when he checked three boards. Airlines say they charge service fees for surfboards because they require special handling. “They tend to be much larger items and are somewhat oddly shaped, which makes it more work to fit them into the belly of aircraft … [Read more...] about More for Your Money: Flying with a surfboard

At TD Garden, fans are feeling the squeeze
As the 3-1 Bruins return to TD Garden for Saturday night’s home opener against the New Jersey Devils — the team’s first regular season game in the venue since last year’s Stanley Cup Finals — a normally joyous occasion has been overshadowed by a roiling controversy concerning fans and their fannies. The replacement earlier this year of seats throughout the arena — as well as the addition of 500 new spots — has left many fuming over the suddenly cramped quarters. In recent days, countless fans have voiced their seat-size-related frustrations, filling social media with complaints about discomfort and nonexistent legroom and, in some cases, threatening to boycott the Garden altogether. “I expect it when I fly on Spirit Airlines,” said Dan Rosa of Lexington, a clinical psychologist and Bruins season-ticket holder for more than 25 years. “I don’t expect it when I go to the Garden.” In a statement this week, TD … [Read more...] about At TD Garden, fans are feeling the squeeze
