Not entirely sure what that meant, I replied simply, “Hola,” to my guide Alexis Alvarado. Pura Vida literally means “pure life.” I soon experienced its other meanings to the “Ticos,” as Costa Ricans are nicknamed. Costa Rica attracts Americans with its peaceful history — the country hasn’t had a standing army since the late 1940s — relatively widespread use of English and U.S. dollars, and reputation as a great place to learn to surf.
