Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe

· October 4, 2019 ·

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Dave Sheen wore out his father's World War II field jacket during junior high. But like so many in the baby boomer generation, Dave seldom heard his father, Merle, talk about the war. He remembers Merle saying that wars don't solve anything. They just kill people. And he remembers hearing his father tell his mother that he wanted to return to France, Belgium and the Netherlands someday to see the countries "when they weren't all torn up." Merle never got the chance. The Janesville insurance adjuster died in 1976, before Dave ever asked him about his wartime experiences. But Dave was lucky. His father, who earned the Silver and Bronze stars and Purple Heart, survived some of Europe's most horrific fighting, and the Army kept a paper trail of his push into Germany with the famed 30th Infantry Division, The Janesville Gazette reported. Known as Old Hickory, the 30th Division was regarded as the cream of the crop among U.S. fighting units. The 30th fought at … [Read more...] about Wisconsin man retraces father’s WWII footsteps in Europe

Eli Manning, Hall of Famer? You’d better believe it

· October 7, 2019 ·

Back when Manning was the Patriots’ worst nightmare. Bill Belichick wasn’t kidding Monday when he concluded his heaping pile of praise for Manning by saying, “I have a ton of respect for Eli and all that he’s done. I wish he’d done a little bit less in a couple games against us.” Does anyone actually need reminding? Tom Brady & Co. would have two more rings if not for Manning’s heroics. There was the first shocking upset back in February 2008, when a then-perfect Patriot team watched Manning escape a sack he never should have escaped to complete a pass he never should have completed, a connection to David Tyree that remains one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time. Then there was the upset sequel four years later, when one Manning throw again made the difference in the game, a sideline strike to Mario Manningham that you can put up against any throw by any great quarterback in a league celebrating its 100th anniversary this … [Read more...] about Eli Manning, Hall of Famer? 9 Tips for Savvy Plus-Size Travelers

· October 2, 2019 ·

One size does not fit all when it comes to traveling and exploring the world. For plus-size globetrotters, that presents some challenges along the way, whether it’s too-snug airplane seats or spa robes meant for someone of more diminutive stature. Take heart, though—the problems are surmountable. Where there is a desire to take a journey, there are workable solutions to ensure grand experiences. Tips for Plus-Size Travelers Here are tips geared to fellow voyagers of size, gleaned from my own travels as a Rubenesque gal who has racked up visits to more than 70 countries. Choose Size-Friendly Airlines In the U.S., most airlines require that you be able to lower both armrests and buckle up your seatbelt (using one extender). That’s the litmus test in determining whether you may be required to buy an adjacent (aka “comfort”) seat. If you do need an additional “comfort” seat, you’ll need to call the airline directly to book them. Policies … [Read more...] about 9 Tips for Savvy Plus-Size Travelers

Nathan Carman’s insurance trial comes to a close

· September 3, 2019 ·

PROVIDENCE — Nathan Carman thought his boat was in good working order when he left Point Judith, R.I., on a fishing trip three years ago, but something “fairly catastrophic” caused it to sink rapidly, causing his mother’s death, Carman’s lawyer said Wednesday. “Mr. Carman would never go out there with his mom in the middle of nowhere if he felt the boat was going to sink,” Carman’s lawyer, David F. Anderson, said during closing arguments Wednesday in a civil insurance trial over Carman’s efforts to collect $85,000 for the loss of the vessel. “Something let go in that boat.” In a 90-minute statement that capped the eight-day federal trial, Anderson argued that the 31-foot Chicken Pox was in poor condition when Carman bought it nine months before it sank, its problems masked by a good paint job and bonding. But a lawyer for two insurers countered that Carman, a Vermont man under investigation for the deaths of his … [Read more...] about Nathan Carman’s insurance trial comes to a close

Red Sox willing to take their time replacing Dave Dombrowski

· October 4, 2019 ·

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman isn’t under contract for 2020. There is no evidence that suggests he would leave Los Angeles given how he has helped set up the team for long-term success. But he has yet to agree to a new contract. Team president Stan Kasten expects it to happen. But until Friedman signs a new deal, the Red Sox have to at least investigate the possibilities. He would be a perfect choice. Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim (pronounced HIGH-em) Bloom fits the Sox’ criteria. He’s a rung below Erik Neander in Tampa Bay’s structure but has been influential in putting the roster together. The Rays have won only six fewer regular-season games than the Red Sox over the last two years spending despite roughly $333 million less on payroll. Friedman left the Rays for the Dodgers and instilled financial discipline while remaining successful. Bloom could do the same for the Sox. The Dodgers combine … [Read more...] about Red Sox willing to take their time replacing Dave Dombrowski
