Why planes can’t fly in very hot weather – and could mean your flight is cancelled
WHILE Brits often head abroad for a warmer climate, heading somewhere too hot could cause problems for your flight. A pilot has revealed that hot weather can result in flights being cancelled in extreme cases. All aircraft need 'lift' to be able to fly - this is when planes use the air pressure to stay up in the air, balancing the gravity force below, drag pull from the rear, and thrust force to propel the aircraft forward. However, the air density becomes much thinner during extreme heat conditions, making it much harder for aircraft to take off or land. This means that it's the temperature at both your destination and original location that can determine if your flight goes ahead or is cancelled. Captain John Cox told USA Today : "There is a maximum temperature listed - if the temperature exceeds that reading, the flight cannot depart." Airline forced to cancel majority of flights from UK airport until 2023
AN airline has announced that they will be cancelling most of their flights from a UK airport until April 2023. Wizz Air confirmed that nearly all flights from Cardiff Airport will be affected for the next six months, citing "economic pressures". Wizz Air’s managing director, Marion Geoffroy: "We are very disappointed to have to suspend several routes from Cardiff Airport for the winter season. "Though these routes have proved popular through the summer season , it would not be commercially viable to continue to operate them through this coming winter due to the challenging macro-economic environment. "This leaves us with no option but to pause these routes until next spring." Passengers affected will be contacted by the airline, she added. Brits would see £200 slashed from energy bills a year under Rishi Sunak’s plans to cancel out price rises
EX-Chancellor Rishi Sunak has set out plans to tackle the cost of living crisis including abolishing VAT on energy, which would see every household see £200 knocked off their bills. He said he was prepared to find up to £10 billion to soften the impact of this October’s price rise on top of the support announced by the Government in May. Mr Sunak attacked rival PM hopeful Liz Truss for her refusal to set out detailed plans beyond cutting green levies. He told The Times: “You can’t heat your home with hope." Rishi's plan comes as fresh analysis predicted that energy bills could top £5,000 next year, more than £200 above previous estimates. Ms Truss has insisted detailed plans must wait until an emergency budget next month - but her camp has acknowledged she will need to give direct support to the poorest households. Rishi previously said: "This winter is going to be extremely tough for families up and down the country, and there is no doubt in my mind that more … [Read more...] about Brits would see £200 slashed from energy bills a year under Rishi Sunak’s plans to cancel out price rises
Colorado student loan debtors demand a break; Biden may deliver – but expect a storm
Colorado student loan debtors to the government: lift off this weight and prioritize higher education for all, the way other wealthy democracies do. They’re demanding permanent cancellation of federal student loan debt and a seventh extension of the COVID-19 pandemic pause on repayment — and intervention Biden administration officials say they’ll decide on before Aug. 31. “For me, this would mean a fighting chance to move toward financial independence and security,” said Michaela Cardinal, 24, who graduated from the University of Colorado in Denver last year and works full time earning $42,000. She owes roughly $30,000 to the government and private lenders. She was the first in her family of ten children to attend college and has relied on her political science degree to begin a career aimed at social good. But conservatives see erasing debts and a longer pause as abhorrent, an insult to working taxpayers who never attended college, and compare it to forgiving automobile, small … [Read more...] about Colorado student loan debtors demand a break; Biden may deliver – but expect a storm
GOP spends big in state-level effort to change Constitution
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 DENVER (AP) — The fliers piled up in mailboxes in central South Dakota like snow during a high-plains blizzard: “Transgender Sex Education in Schools?” one asked. “Vote Against Sex Ed Radical Mary Duvall for State Senate.” The mailers were part of a $58,000 campaign against the five-term Republican lawmaker, an enormous sum of money in a place where the cost of running for a statehouse seat is typically in the low five figures. Despite the subject of the attack ads, Duvall was targeted not for her stance on sex education but for her opposition to a longshot bid by some conservatives to force a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution. “I knew they were angry at me, but I had no idea this was going to be coming during my primary campaign,” said Duvall, who ended up losing her race by 176 votes. Duvall opposed legislation that would have added South Dakota to 19 other … [Read more...] about GOP spends big in state-level effort to change Constitution
