Trump’s envoy who denied quid pro quo now says he isn’t certain

· October 11, 2019 ·

The Sept. 9 exchange between Sondland and the top US diplomat to Ukraine has become central to the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into whether the president abused his office in pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden and his son, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company. The White House and its defenders have held up Sondland’s text, which included ‘‘no quid pro quo’s of any kind,’’ as proof that none was ever considered. Sondland will hold out the possibility that Trump wasn’t truthful in his denial of a quid pro quo as well as an alternative scenario in which the president’s interest in the scheme soured at a time when his administration faced mounting scrutiny over why it was withholding about $400 million in security assistance to Ukraine and delaying a leader-level visit with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. ‘‘Whether he’s deciding it’s … [Read more...] about Trump’s envoy who denied quid pro quo now says he isn’t certain

Hunter’s criminal trial delayed until January 22

Duncan Hunter; he will now face trial starting on January 22, instead of Jan. 14, based on a court decision Monday.U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan changed the date after lawyers requested a delay. It will allow time for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to consider arguments by Hunter and the government in appeal of Whelan’s refusal in July to throw out the indictment.Hunter’s lawyers plan to ask the appeals court to dismiss charges that he spent more than $250,000 in campaign donations on girlfriends, family vacations, tuition for his children and other personal expenses.Whelan said Monday that he wants to get the criminal trial done before the March 3 primary for the sake of voters and the public. Both Duncan and Margaret Hunter pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were arraigned in August 2018. Margaret Hunter changed her plea in June to guilty of a single charge and agreed to testify against … [Read more...] about Hunter’s criminal trial delayed until January 22

French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

· October 6, 2019 ·

Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. IVF treatment is currently only available to heterosexual couples in France. (Photo: AFP/Josep Lago) Organisers say they are hoping 100,000 will turn out against a law heading to the Senate this month, after it was approved by the lower house of parliament in September. President Emmanuel Macron pledged during his 2017 election campaign to push the law despite deep resistance among right-wing opponents as well as conservative Roman Catholics and other religious groups. They had mobilised massively in 2012 and 2013 against a move by Macron's Socialist predecessor Francois Hollande to legalise marriage for homosexual couples, with one Paris protest attracting 340,000 people according to police. But that law did not allow lesbian … [Read more...] about French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

Turbulence hits the Democrats’ top tier

· October 7, 2019 ·

Just a few weeks ago, the Democratic presidential field had a first tier that was clearly defined and stable enough that some were treating the moment as immutable. No longer. Race-reshaping turbulence has struck two of the campaign’s top trio. The oldest candidate, Bernie Sanders, has been temporarily sidelined by a heart attack. The second oldest, Joe Biden, is wrestling with a rumor-mongered mess partly of his own making. Only the third, Elizabeth Warren — age-wise, the youngest member of the Democrats’ septuagenarian set — has proceeded politically apace. Sanders, 78, knew his age could be an issue in this campaign, but believed it was surmountable. “I’m very blessed with my health,” he said a year ago. “I literally cannot remember the last time I missed a day because of illness.” That, obviously, has now changed. Sanders, who went out for a walk on Monday, says he will continue his run. But the heart problem that rendered … [Read more...] about Turbulence hits the Democrats’ top tier
