By CAITY WEAVER photographs by: Holly Andres Tell your fellow americans that you plan to cross the United States by train, and their reactions will range from amusement at your spellbinding eccentricity to naked horror that they, through some fatal social miscalculation, have become acquainted with a person who would plan to cross the United States by train. Depending how you slice it — time or money — there are either 61 or 960 immediate reasons not to travel by Amtrak trains from New York City to Los Angeles. Those are the extra hours and dollars, respectively, that you might reasonably expect to … [Read more...] about There Is No Reason to Cross the U.S. by Train. But I Did It Anyway.

Opinion Nick Earl has made excellent progress as a marathon runner in recent years. Picture: Archant Archant © 2012 I make no apologies for writing about marathon running again this week particularly on the back of Nick Earl’s superb 2:14:38 performance in the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan last Sunday. The standard was so high that the first 49 athletes all amazingly broke the 2 hours 20 min barrier. For many years us older athletes continually harped on about the good old days saying how we trained much harder and raced much faster back in the day. For several years I have to say I was in full agreement, particularly when it came to marathons and road race times. However, more recently it seems that things are on the way up again. There are more people than ever running for sure, but also standards at good club level seem to be going up again and very much so here in Norfolk. Whilst not every club runner out there is following the 100 miles a week routine of old or … [Read more...] about Neil Featherby: There’s a buzz around CoNAC and its athletes that’s putting Norfolk on the map
Opinion Mark Armstrong in pain on the home straight of the Robin Hood Marathon in 2017. Picture: Robin Hood Marathon Archant As we approach the business end of marathon training, there is just one question to answer... ‘Am I doing enough?’ I wasn’t sure I would get to this stage of marathon training. There are just a handful of long runs to go now before the big day in Manchester on April 7 and it’s only now that I’m allowing myself to think about the race. Those in training for spring marathons are definitely getting towards the business end of their training. I’ve got my last race at the Cambridge Half Marathon on Sunday before two long runs in March and the taper can begin for Manchester.Any regular reader will know the problems I’ve had with injuries and I still have to tell myself before every run that the priority must be to get through the session without sustaining an injury. But I’m going beyond that now… away from … [Read more...] about Running column: Mark Armstrong explains how he’s trying to make the start line with a clear conscience
It's no surprise Prince Harry is good with kids. He's dedicated a lot of his time to various organizations that support children both in the UK and around the world. Orlando, Florida, is America’s number one destination for visitors, attracting 72 million annually, and it is considered to be the theme park capital of the world. Walt Disney World, the largest, comprises Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot and for water babes there are two water parks; Blizzard Beach and the Typhoon Lagoon. For my own Disney experience and anticipating oodles of fun and adventures, I began my visit at the Magic Kingdom, which is crammed with exciting attractions and thrilling rides, and of course there is ample opportunity for adults to relive a bygone childhood. The sight of Mickey and Minnie Mouse dancing on the stage in front of Cinderella’s Castle resulted in adults and children alike jumping up and down together with glee and I joined in with abandon. The Magic Kingdom also features Adventureland, where popular attractions include the Swiss Family Treehouse, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin and the hugely entertaining and … [Read more...] about Take a trip to Orlando and revisit old friends Mickey Mouse and Snow White
