Two families on the Spanish island of Ibiza have started selling one of the island's most unlimited commodities: its air. Italian ice cream seller Gianluca Pomo and his friend José Antonio Fernández were walking through the Ibizan countryside on a day out with their families when they struck upon the idea. “We realized how lucky we were and we decided to try and immortalize that moment,” Fernández told The Local. “We decided to seal the air in a container so that whenever you looked at it, you remembered that moment,” he added. Pomo, who runs an ice cream shop on the island, began selling Aire de Ibiza (Air of Ibiza) a month ago and the pair already report a lot of interest - unsurprisingly, mainly from tourists keen to take home a more unusual … [Read more...] about Could bottled Ibiza air be this summer’s best souvenir?
Police will be on the look out for offending tourists. Photo: AFP This summer tourists in Ibiza risk dehydration or a fine under new measures that will see the drinking of all liquids banned from public areas. The bylaw is being considered by San Antonio (Sant Antoni), a seaside town on the west coast of the island, in a bid to clampdown on the booze culture that the resort has become infamous for. The measures, which have been presented to the council but have yet to receive the green light, will see fines of €750 imposed on tourists caught flouting the ban, even with a takeaway cup of coffee or bottle of water. "Given how difficult it is for police to differentiate between whether it is alcohol or a soft drink being consumed it is necessary to adopt an outright ban," explained Aida Alcaraz, a town councillor in San Antonio. "Obviously people will be allowed to consume drinks on the terraces of bars but they won’t be able to take the drinks off the premises," she … [Read more...] about Ibiza bans drinking in street… and that includes water
Photo: Mare Nostrum Hotel in Ibiza. A British salesman was discovered dead by the pool after spending too long in the sun on his first day of holiday, an inquest heard. Neil Murphy, 43, had checked into the all-inclusive Mare Nostrum in Playa Da En Bossa on the party island on August 12th. After spending his first day on a sunlounger by the pool he was discovered dead the next morning by fellow holidaymakers, an inquest in Birmingham heard on Monday. Coroner Louise Hunt ruled that he had died of heatstroke. "It is clear from evidence available to me that Neil Murphy was found dead lying on a sun bed at the hotel Mare Nostrum on August 13. I am going to record that he died from heatstroke,"she said. Murphy had flown out to Ibiza for a holiday on his own telling friends he was looking forward to a week of sun and clubbing at the island's famous Space nightclub. "Sun and Space!!! A nice week away in Ibiza. Roll on August 12th. It's going to be fun... first time away for a few … [Read more...] about British holidaymaker died of heatstroke on Ibiza sunbed
“We don't want a tourism model that promotes these irresponsible attitudes," says the president of Ibiza Hotel Federation. Photo: Eva Rinaldi/Flickr A UK safety campaign warning Brits on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza not to walk home alone has been slammed by local businessmen and politicians as "false" and "excessive". “Don’t walk home alone or with someone you don’t trust, it could cost you YOUR LIFE” is just one of the messages the British Embassy has sent out as part of its safety campaign for British tourists on the Balearic island of Ibiza. Other slogans in the “Enjoy and Respect” campaign highlight the potentially fatal dangers of balcony jumping (Don’t fool around on balconies) and having one’s drink ‘spiked’ (Keep an eye on your drink). “Based on the number of incidents there’s been in the past, it makes sense that the British Embassy has launched this safety campaign,” Roberto … [Read more...] about UK ‘scaremongering’ over ‘dangerous’ Ibiza
