Yvette Tanamal and A. Muh. Ibnu Aqil (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sat, January 28 2023 The European Green Deal remained among the European Union’s top priorities in both the 27-nation bloc’s 2023 ASEAN and Indonesia strategy, two senior EU diplomats told a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. While its environmental stance on trade had caused heated rifts with some of the largest ASEAN member states, Brussels would ensure that other areas of cooperation could continue undisturbed, they added. EU Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Piket emphasized that finalizing the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Trade Agreement (IEU-CEPA) by the end of the year would be the dominant concern of the bloc’s negotiators. He added that a total of four negotiation rounds had been scheduled for February, May, July and September. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper … [Read more...] about EU’s green policy remains key priority in ASEAN ties

Funding, research hamper Indonesia’s seaweed potential for biofuel
Billy Adison Aditijanto (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sat, January 28 2023 Indonesia, the world’s largest seaweed exporter, is considering the commodity’s use in producing bio-crude to help reduce the country’s reliance on costly imported crude. Though the potential for seaweed-based biofuel is huge, much still needs to be done to turn the idea into reality. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said on Jan. 19 that seaweed-based biofuel could compete with the cost of other biomass, such as corn, sugarcane and cassava, which required a vast amount of land for cultivation. Seaweed is more sustainable than other plants used to make biofuel, according to a joint study by researchers from state-run Diponegoro University and South Korea’s Pukyong National University, so it is considerably more preferable in pursuing the country’s net zero agenda. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and … [Read more...] about Funding, research hamper Indonesia’s seaweed potential for biofuel
Colorado Rapids sign center back Andreas Maxsø to three-year deal as Designated Player
The Colorado Rapids added a big piece to their back line Friday. Colorado signed 28-year-old Andreas Maxsø from Danish club Brøndby IF on a three-year deal through the 2025 season with an option for a fourth year in Burgundy in 2026. He will occupy a Designated Player and international spot on the Rapids’ roster. A transfer fee was not immediately available, however. He did have six months remaining on his deal in Denmark and while he could have been a free agent this summer, as a result of Colorado opting to buy the Danish center back now, Brøndby will still get a full-value deal. Maxsø will be a significant addition on the defensive front, as Colorado conceded 59 goals across all competitions and failed to make the 2022 MLS Cup playoffs. Standing at 6-foot-3, the Dane could become a must-watch player in the Western Conference, and it’s a big reason why the Rapids’ front office have been so high on him. “Andreas is an experienced and physically imposing center back who has … [Read more...] about Colorado Rapids sign center back Andreas Maxsø to three-year deal as Designated Player

Houston’s in for a pretty crummy weather weekend after raucous storms
The Houston area is in for a wet and gray weekend. Just days after a destructive tornado ripped through Southeast Texas, experts are forecasting cloudy skies, rain and possible severe weather over Saturday and Sunday. Cloud cover should increase significantly from Friday night into Saturday, with light rain starting to fall across the region by Saturday morning, according to Space City Weather's Matt Lanza. "We don’t currently expect Saturday to be a washout, but you’ll probably see a few raindrops in much of the area," Lanza wrote in his Friday morning forecast. A rush of warm air moving in from the Gulf of Mexico should push temperatures close to 70 degrees, with potentially high winds nearing 25 mph by Saturday afternoon, according to Lanza. Another storm system is expected to move into the Bayou City area by Saturday night and into Sunday. But don't worry too much–Space City's experts predict this line of storms will be far less severe than Tuesday's. "This system … [Read more...] about Houston’s in for a pretty crummy weather weekend after raucous storms

The other face of the younger generation. What can we do?
Toronata Tambun (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Sat, January 28, 2023 From 2020 to 2022, I met intensively with the country's future leaders studying in its most-prestigious institutes and universities. There is only a “handful” of them: Bright, smart, English as their second language, visionary, full of energy, promising and diligent students. They stand for what the mainstream media depict as "upper-middle income group, highly educated, latte-sipping and [future] white-collar employees". They are in the 10-percent bracket of university graduates to be absorbed into industries. However, to my demise, a very articulate journalist’s work, “Underprivileged millennials: Being young and poor in Jakarta” ( Tehusijarana , 2020) portrays a less-known side of the country's millennials (the most significant part of Indonesia's much-vaunted “demographic bonus”), which very much to the contrary: "only have a high-school level education, work in blue-collar or … [Read more...] about The other face of the younger generation.
