Howes: FCA’s Italian ranks slim after Marchionne
Daniel Howes The Detroit News Published 3:10 p.m. UTC Jul 24, 2018 As prominently as Italy’s most storied industrial icon figures in the name of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, the leadership of the transatlantic automaker now is less Italian than at any time in the company's nine-year history. The gravely ill Sergio Marchionne, replaced Saturday by Britain’s Mike Manley, is officially out after 14 years as CEO because of what the company describes as serious complications following shoulder surgery. And the 66-year-old Marchionne’s trusted lieutenant, Alfredo Altavilla, resigned Monday “to pursue other professional interests” because FCA’s directors bypassed him for the top job. The result: FCA’s governing Group Executive Council will contain just two Italians among its 19-member governing group, which met with Manley in a regularly scheduled meeting Monday in Turin, Italy. What that shift portends for Detroit’s No. 3 automaker … [Read more...] about Howes: FCA’s Italian ranks slim after Marchionne

Cannabis plants. File photo: CreativeNature/Depositphotos The plants, worth an estimated €20 million at market value, were discovered on July 21st in Vibo Valentia in Calabria, southern Italy. The drugs plantation was run by Emanuele Mancuso, son of Pantaleone, head of the notorious 'Ndrangheta clan in the Calabrian town of Limbadi. 'Ndrangheta refers to Calabrian organized crime. Using seeds purchased online, Mancuso had set up a vast plantation in Calabria's fertile hills. The trafficker controlled the plantation and its workers, many of whom were non-European migrants, using drones, adds the police report. The police arrested Mancuso and 17 other accomplices and were able to "reconstruct the entire cannabis supply chain, identifying all the people involved," said police in a statement. Italian family of child dissolved in acid by mafia to receive €2 million
File photo of police officers standing guard during an antimafia operation. Photo: Marcello Paternostro/AFP A court in Sicily has ordered a payout of more than €2 million in compensation for the family of a boy whose body was dissolved in acid by mafiosi in a case that shocked Italy. Giuseppe di Matteo was the son of a mafia clan member turned justice collaborator and was aged just 12 when he was kidnapped in 1993. The teenager was kept in poor conditions and brutally tortured over a period of almost 800 days in an attempt to intimidate di Matteo's father Santino and force him to withdraw his testimony. The boy's father refused to do this, and Di Matteo was strangled by his captors who then dissolved his body in acid. Dissolving bodies in acid or otherwise ensuring bodies cannot be recovered is relatively common practice among Italy's mafiosi, both as a means of destroying evidence and to prevent families from carrying out proper burials.
