Medication abortion is common; here’s how it works

July 2, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

By LINDSEY TANNER and MATTHEW PERRONE Medication abortions became the preferred method for ending pregnancy in the U.S. even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. These involve taking two prescription medicines days apart — at home or in a clinic. Abortion procedures are an invasive medical technique that empties the womb. They are sometimes called surgical abortions, although they don’t involve surgery. Abortion by pills involves the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. As more states seek abortion limits, demand for the pills is expected to grow. HOW THE DRUGS WORK Mifepristone is taken first, swallowed by mouth. The drug dilates the cervix and blocks the effects of the hormone progesterone, which is needed to sustain a pregnancy. Misoprostol, a drug also used to treat stomach ulcers, is taken 24 to 48 hours later. The pill is designed to dissolve when placed between the gums and teeth or in the vagina. It causes the uterus to cramp and contract, causing … [Read more...] about Medication abortion is common; here’s how it works

Andy Murray vows to play Wimbledon again after John Isner defeat – but injuries might shatter Brit’s dream

June 30, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

ANDY MURRAY has vowed to be back at Wimbledon – but only if his body lets him. The two-time champion crashed out to American John Isner in four sets on Centre Court . But the disappointed Scot insists this is NOT the end at SW19. Murray , 35, said: “I mean, it depends on how I am physically. Physically I feel good, then I'll try to keep playing. “But it's extremely difficult with the problems I've had with my body in the last few years to make long-term predictions about how I'm going to be even in a few weeks' time, never mind in a year's time. “If physically I'm in a good place, yeah, I will continue to play. “But it's not easy to keep my body in optimal condition to compete at the highest level. “I feel disappointed right now. Obviously I wanted to do well here. "I love playing at Wimbledon, a surface that I feel like I can still compete with the best.” Asked if he still feels he can compete, he said: “Based on tonight's match, my view hasn’t changed. … [Read more...] about Andy Murray vows to play Wimbledon again after John Isner defeat – but injuries might shatter Brit’s dream

Burning Man meets the Tour de France: California’s weirdest race returns to Arcata

June 2, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

On a sunny and wind-whipped Memorial Day, for the hundreds of spectators standing on the western shores of the Eel River beneath Fernbridge, some 250 miles north of San Francisco, a truly unusual spectacle is about to unfold. Giant sculptures will be crossing the river. The first to enter the drink is Humpbacks of Notre Dame, a top-heavy, climate-change-inspired artwork featuring fabric-wrapped foam whales and French cathedrals. It is followed by an oversized representation of a lemon and a colossal ode to a can of tuna. A swarm of gargantuan bumblebees. A praying mantis riding atop an all-female hair band. An imitation hot rod full of Abraham Lincolns. Welcome to the Kinetic Grand Championship, a three-day race of human-powered sculptures over 50 miles of land, sand, mud and water. This is where Burning Man meets the Tour de France. The competition kicks off in the central plaza of bohemian college town Arcata, and from there, the sculptures cruise over city streets, up and … [Read more...] about Burning Man meets the Tour de France: California’s weirdest race returns to Arcata
