French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

· October 6, 2019 ·

Thousands of people prepared to descend on Paris on Sunday (Oct 6) to protest a government plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013. IVF treatment is currently only available to heterosexual couples in France. (Photo: AFP/Josep Lago) Organisers say they are hoping 100,000 will turn out against a law heading to the Senate this month, after it was approved by the lower house of parliament in September. President Emmanuel Macron pledged during his 2017 election campaign to push the law despite deep resistance among right-wing opponents as well as conservative Roman Catholics and other religious groups. They had mobilised massively in 2012 and 2013 against a move by Macron's Socialist predecessor Francois Hollande to legalise marriage for homosexual couples, with one Paris protest attracting 340,000 people according to police. But that law did not allow lesbian … [Read more...] about French to protest pro IVF law for single women, lesbians

Live-in personal attendants: When the law at work hits home

· October 14, 2019 ·

The California Court of Appeal recently clarified the wage rights of the thousands of personal attendants working in California households. The FactsOn April 1, 2014, Lea Liday quit her job as the live-in caregiver for the two autistic sons of Drs. Peter Sim and Loraine Diego. Liday received a monthly salary of $3,000. There was no agreement about how many hours that salary covered or on the hourly rate the salary contemplated.Liday worked around-the-clock seven days a week, except for the six hours each weekday when the boys were in school. Liday slept in the severely autistic older boy’s room to be available when his sleeping irregularities caused him to wake up at night. She took a total of 14 weekends off from April 1, 2010 through December 31, 2013. Liday claimed her salary did not compensate her for all the hours she worked. She further claimed she had not been paid overtime from Jan. 1, 2014 until she quit. The LawCalifornia law defines a “personal attendant” as … [Read more...] about Live-in personal attendants: When the law at work hits home

Vietnamese lawmakers remain insistent workers should work less

· October 4, 2019 ·

Bui Van Cuong, a former chairman of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, said it is unfair that employees in the business sector work 48 hours a week while their counterparts in government only work 40. If the former’s working hours are reduced to 44, they could take Saturday afternoon and Sunday off to take care of their family and health besides reducing the inequality, he said at a meeting held by the National Assembly’s Committee on Social Affairs Wednesday to discuss proposed amendments to the Labor Code. "We can’t let the business sector work its finger to the bone while the administrative sector has it easy," Cuong said. Luu Binh Nhuong, deputy head of the Committee for People’s Aspirations, citing a report that said 30 percent of government officials "do nothing at work," said: "Many officials are too casual and irresponsible, … [Read more...] about Vietnamese lawmakers remain insistent workers should work less

Breast cancer charity a mother-daughter passion project

· October 9, 2019 ·

When a woman receives a breast cancer diagnosis, that marks day one of a long race to restore her health. But for many San Diego women, there are more immediate short-term hurdles to overcome, like paying the rent or utilities and co-pays and prescriptions not covered by insurance. Now that gap is being filled by Shades of Pink Foundation California, an Encinitas nonprofit run by mother-daughter volunteers Vembra Holnagel, 63, and Kianne Farmer, 34. Since its founding in 2013, the all-volunteer Shades of Pink California has awarded a combined $178,000 in onetime cash grants to 143 San Diego County women with breast cancer. The now-$2,000 grants have been awarded to women in active cancer treatment who are facing unexpected financial challenges, often related to the loss of a job or leave of absence from work to focus on their health. In most cases, applicants approved for grants receive a check in as little as 48 hours.“By the time they reach out to us, they’re already deep … [Read more...] about Breast cancer charity a mother-daughter passion project

UNICEF frets over underage maids in Vietnam

· October 8, 2019 ·

Shelley Casey, the UNICEF representative in Vietnam, told government officials and experts at a consultation workshop held on Monday to discuss amendments to the Labor Code that several countries around the world have classified this job as dangerous work for minors. In the Philippines and Malaysia, for instance, hiring children under 15 for housework is illegal, she pointed out. "Juvenile workers are vulnerable to abuse. Therefore, if they are allowed to work, the authorities need to devise some safety measures." The proposed amendments do not make hiring juveniles for housework illegal, only subjecting domestic workers to abuse, violent treatment, sexual harassment, and forced labor. They also require employers to sign a contract with domestic workers and not confiscate their personal documents. Le Dinh Quang, deputy head of the labor relations department at the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, concurred with Casey saying working in houses has hidden risks given the fact there … [Read more...] about UNICEF frets over underage maids in Vietnam
