For seasoned globetrotters, jet lag is an all-too-familiar part of international travel—the fatigue, the disorientation, and especially that pesky inner alarm that wakes you up at 4:00 a.m. and sends you stumbling back to bed before dinnertime. While there’s no real cure, the advice below explains how to avoid jet lag and which remedies are most likely to help. What Is Jet Lag? Jet lag is a physical reaction to a rapid change in time zones. It affects most travelers, including seasoned flyers like flight attendants and pilots. Common symptoms include disorientation, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, dry eyes, headaches, irregular bowels, and general malaise. Note that flying from, say, New York City to Santiago won’t produce jet lag in the true sense because both cities are in the same time zone—but the effects of the long flight might feel quite a bit like classic jet lag. In these cases, you’re just tired from the flight, and a good night’s sleep … [Read more...] about The Best Ways to Prevent and Treat Jet Lag

Extra attention to your skin on the plane and at least a few nights after landing in a destination is critical. Decades of regularly flying long haul have taught me that it’s necessary to adjust a skincare routine when traveling. Extra attention to your skin on the plane and at least a few nights after landing in a destination is critical. Why? Easy way to stay healthy on airplanes
A colleague had been on an airplane — and he felt a cold coming on. With watery eyes and a red nose, he asked, "Have you written about how to stay healthy on flights?" It seems like it's time to do so again, especially because flu season is on the runway. Getting sick after a flight is a common complaint for a few reasons. Fliers are squeezed together. Planes are filled with germ-ridden surfaces and the circulating air at 30,000 feet has low humidity. Also, jet lag can mess with a person's immune system. How to fight those forces? Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds — and touch nothing in the lavatory afterward without the shield of a paper towel. Hand rubs with at least 60% alcohol will do the trick if soap and water are unavailable. Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes with unwashed hands. Beware the germiest places on planes. That includes … [Read more...] about Easy way to stay healthy on airplanes
Switzerland’s mountains of magnificence
Sometimes exceptional travel experiences simply demand a repeat. After visiting the magnificent Lake Geneva area of Switzerland a few years ago, my husband, Tony, and I resolved to return to this beautiful country to continue our voyage of discovery. This time around we opted to visit the Canton of Bern, famous for its jaw-dropping Alpine scenery, and the cosmopolitan and historical city of Basel, situated on the shores of the river Rhine. We again elected to fly into the Zurich Airport from our San Diego home base. Thanks to the fact that Zurich’s airport has its own railroad terminal, we were on our way in no time after landing. With our Swiss Rail Travel Passes in hand (sure, you could rent a car, but why would you want to?), we settled into our comfortable seats and watched the glorious Swiss scenery roll by. The travel pass gives the bearer unlimited first class train access in addition to several other benefits and discounts. Most importantly, it eliminates the stress of … [Read more...] about Switzerland’s mountains of magnificence
