Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac once again drew attention for comments he made off the court. Isaac, who hasn’t played since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the “NBA bubble” in August 2020, spoke at the ReAwaken America Tour hosted by Clay Clark on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He touched on why he chose to stand for the national anthem in the “bubble,” his thoughts on the Black Lives Matter organization and why he chose not to get the COVID-19 vaccine — a topic he touched on during the preseason . When reached for comment Sunday afternoon, the Magic issued a statement to the Orlando Sentinel via the organization’s chief communications officer Joel Glass in response to Isaac’s remarks, saying: “Jonathan is a thoughtful young man with tremendous faith who has done great work in the community and is using his platform to express his voice.” This article first appeared on OrlandoSentinel.com . New tech aims to keep e-scooters off S.F. sidewalks. Will it work?
A crackdown on riding electric scooters on sidewalks has arrived in San Francisco, though it’s unclear whether it will lead to noticeable changes. Lime, Scoot and Spin, San Francisco’s three permitted scooter operators, recently began deploying scooters equipped with varying technology meant to detect and slow down riders on sidewalks. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which regulates the companies, required them to work to discourage people from riding e-scooters on sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety. The operators plan to transition their entire combined fleets of 5,500 scooters to use the various technologies later this year. Lime is using a “GPS zone-based tracking system that allows us to be able to detect when someone is either on the sidewalk or also in the streets,” said Bivett Brackett-Thompson, the company’s senior manager of government relations. A pilot started around the Embarcadero. Scoot combines GPS and “sensor fusion technology” to … [Read more...] about New tech aims to keep e-scooters off S.F. sidewalks. Will it work?
San Francisco garage fire leaves one injured, displaces seven
A garage fire in San Francisco’s Excelsior district early Sunday left a person injured and displaced six others from their home, authorities said. Firefighters responded to the home at 200 Edinburgh Street at 5:46 a.m., said San Francisco Fire Lt. Jonathan Baxter. The blaze evolved rapidly, which is not unusual with garage fires, sending plumes of smoke into the air, Baxter said. As a result, the entire home suffered extensive damage. “At this time it doesn’t look like it’s a suspicious fire,” said Baxter, adding that the cause of the blaze was under investigation. A family of seven — all adults — were displaced by the fire, and one of the victims was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Baxter emphasized the importance of residents having working smoke alarms and an escape plan in case of a fire emergency. “The outcome of this fire could definitely have been worse for these individuals if there wasn’t early notification to 911 … [Read more...] about San Francisco garage fire leaves one injured, displaces seven
Drug-overdose prevention gets a makeover from SF design firm Frog
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 When it comes to administering the life-saving drug that can reverse a heroin overdose, San Francisco industrial designer Jonathan Grossman saw a “user experience” problem that needed to be solved. The drug, called naloxone but also known by the brand name Narcan, has become an important tool against the epidemic of opioid overdoses, which killed a record 28,000 Americans in 2014. The emergency antidote, which comes in both nasal and injectable forms, reverses the effects of an overdose by triggering an unpleasant yet effective withdrawal. The people most likely to be nearby in the event of a drug overdose — often fellow users — have to be trained to use it, and also have to assemble various separate components of a makeshift device, typically under stress. “I was watching this training video on how to use naloxone and I said, ‘That’s terrible!’ It’s an emergency situation … [Read more...] about Drug-overdose prevention gets a makeover from SF design firm Frog

Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki remain day to day with ankle injuries and are out of the Chicago Cubs lineup
The Chicago Cubs’ middle-infield depth is being tested. Nico Hoerner is day to day with right ankle soreness after exiting Wednesday’s win in San Diego following a collision with second-base umpire Dan Iassogna in the second inning. Hoerner is still being evaluated after initial imaging Wednesday did not show a fracture. Seiya Suzuki’s status also remains day to day because of lingering right ankle soreness. The right fielder pinch hit in the ninth inning Tuesday but did not play Wednesday. Suzuki took batting practice Friday. Coming off Thursday’s day off, neither Hoerner nor Suzuki was in the lineup for Friday’s series opener at the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager David Ross indicated they were available off the bench, though given Hoerner’s ankle continues to get checked out, he likely won’t be a first option. Hoerner’s absence thins the Cubs’ middle-infield options. Nick Madrigal went on the injured list Tuesday with a low back strain. Meanwhile, shortstop Andrelton … [Read more...] about Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki remain day to day with ankle injuries and are out of the Chicago Cubs lineup
Who from the Magic’s 2021-22 roster will be in Orlando for 2022-23?
With the NBA draft and free agency creeping up, more attention is being put on who the Orlando Magic will add during the offseason. But whom the Magic add will depend on which players from the 2021-22 roster return. Orlando prioritized developing its younger players during a season that ended with a 22-60 record. Expect a similar approach to 2022-23. “Our goals remain the same, which are to develop these young guys,” Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said during an interview on FM 96.9 The Game’s Open Mike with the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi . “Everybody says you need stars in this league. Sometimes stars don’t always reveal themselves instantly. “There are still evaluations to be made. There are still a lot of improvements that our guys have to make and that’s going to take a lot of work. And it’s going to take time. I don’t really think we recalibrate our goals going into the season. We ramp them up, we challenge our guys to get better, and from a … [Read more...] about Who from the Magic’s 2021-22 roster will be in Orlando for 2022-23?
