Want to Love Your Body? Try Swimming Naked.
To hear more audio stories from publications like The New York Times, download Audm for iPhone or Android . I heard about the gay beach the way I hear about all the good gay things: Through a lover, an ex-lover, my ex-lover’s new love. A warm mouth pressed against my ear on the dance floor, a dropped pin, an Instagram D.M. The murmurs were about a queer nude beach nestled along the coast of Oaxaca. It took a full day and a half to get there, flying first into Mexico City and then catching a shorter flight toward the Pacific. When I landed, I got into a taxi with a few other folks heading to the beach. The driver looked at me sideways. “Esta es tu primera vez?” “Sí,” I replied. “Por qué Zipolite?” I hadn’t quite figured that part out yet, not enough to explain it. I shrugged. He shook his head and drove with his knees so he could use both hands to pantomime hordes of tourists attacking the dry countryside. Behind his miming, the windshield of the car was cracked in … [Read more...] about Want to Love Your Body? Try Swimming Naked.
Flooded out but resilient: Pajaro residents who stayed behind face mounting challenges
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 PAJARO, Monterey County — For nearly a week, Diego Garcia stayed at home in this farmworker community with his mother and three siblings — refusing to evacuate even as the water from the levee break flooded the street outside their apartment. The family couldn’t afford to pay for a hotel or another place to stay. But as the flood soaked the fields where Garcia’s mother picks strawberries, Garcia, 18, knew he had to leave his family and return to school and work in Watsonville. So the high school junior grabbed some clothes and drove past the police stationed at Pajaro River Bridge, tasked with keeping people out of Pajaro. Since he left three days ago, Garcia has returned to his high school, worked after school at a butcher’s shop and applied for a job at a local pizza shop. At night, he sleeps in his car at a park in Watsonville. “It’s hard,” Garcia said. “No one is going to have money … [Read more...] about Flooded out but resilient: Pajaro residents who stayed behind face mounting challenges

AN OBESE monkey who was sent to "fat camp" two years ago to lose weight now looks fighting fit as he poses in a swimming pool in newly released photos. Godzilla the macaque had weighed 19kg - nearly double the standard weight of his species - before he was rescued from his life of indulgence. Deadly radioactive cylinder MISSING from power plant in highly populated tourist hotspot sparking frantic drone search
A DEADLY radioactive cylinder has disappeared from a power plant in a highly populated tourist hotspot, sparking a frantic drone search. Staff at the coal-fired plant in Thailand 's Prachinbri province noticed the 12-inch steel tube was missing during routine checks on Friday. The public were warned that it poses serious health risks if they come into contact with it and they should alert authorities immediately. The metal cylinder, used for measuring ash, is packed full of Caesium-137, making it dangerously radioactive. The substance is commonly used to calibrate radiation gauges but can wreak havoc on humans who come into contact with it. It is not clear how much Caesium-137 is inside the missing tube, which was part of a silo at the power plant 60 miles east of Bangkok. John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Rather by surprise, History Colorado found itself at the center of protests against police violence and racism after Memorial Day, given its flagship museum’s location in downtown’s Civic Center Cultural Complex — just steps from the Denver Art Museum and the Colorado State Capitol. But the institution has embraced this moment in history , collecting artifacts of the protests even as dozens of volunteers worked to remove graffiti and trash from the exterior. Officials at the state’s flagship history museum are now hoping to redirect attention to what’s inside — in a socially distanced way, of course. History Colorado began unlocking its doors for in-person visits at eight museums across the state this week, including the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center (open June 15) and Fort Vasquez (in Platteville, June 17). The Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House (in Denver), El Pueblo History Museum and Trinidad History Museum all open on June 19, while … [Read more...] about John Denver’s all-denim ski suit is back — and so are many Colorado museums
Hong Kong’s New Kids on the Block
HONG KONG — The art scene here was largely closed off to the world for three years, but the city’s self-imposed pandemic isolation has been an unexpected boon to the local art scene. There has been soul-searching, and freshness injected with the addition of some radical (for this city) young newcomers. At No. 3 Staunton Street in the city’s SoHo district, the roughly 1,300 square-foot ground floor was once used as a parking space for a Ferrari. Now it has a new purpose, as a gallery space for a new venture — the Young Soy Gallery . “Young Soy” is Cantonese slang for ugly, and the “ugly” gallery is determined to shake up the conservative local art scene. The gallery’s strong mission statement, or manifesto , is to be inclusive, unconventional in their approach, and to cultivate artists with potential to claim a position in art history. They see the artists whose work they show as “philosophers, educators, rebels, visionaries, perhaps even degenerates.” As Hong Kong continues … [Read more...] about Hong Kong’s New Kids on the Block
In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation
By Ella Nilsen , CNN Updated 0902 GMT (1702 HKT) February 4, 2023 Kingman, Arizona (CNN) Driving along county roads that are little more than dirt paths, Tim Walsh remarked that the expansive valley below the Long Mountain range used to be no more than tumbleweeds and scraggly cactuses. Now, it's pistachio trees as far as the eye can see. Far from mature, the pistachio saplings are just a few feet tall. The trees were planted for "miles and miles, clear up to the base of the mountain," said Walsh, a lifelong Kingman resident and head of Mohave County's Department of Development Services. Over the past decade, the vast desert area around the 33,000-person city of Kingman has been transformed into an agricultural enclave. Green alfalfa fields were first planted below the mountains, then eventually replaced with thirsty pistachio trees. But as those farms grow, county and city officials fear the groundwater -- their only source of water -- is not capable of supporting … [Read more...] about In deep-red corner of Arizona, threat of losing water starts to outweigh fear of regulation
