Minus Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Nets fall to Spurs for third straight loss
The Spurs had the best player on the floor. With Kevin Durant (MCL sprain) out and Kyrie Irving (right calf soreness) scratched hours ahead of tipoff, San Antonio’s star forward Keldon Johnson erupted for a career-high scoring night to hand the Nets a 106-98 loss last Tuesday night. The Nets have now lost three straight games in the aftermath of the right knee injury projected to sideline Durant another three weeks. Ben Simmons did not play in the loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Irving missed Tuesday’s game, though he’s hopeful to play Thursday against the Phoenix Suns. As a result, the Nets failed to generate offense. Simmons finished with a triple double (10 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds) but turned the ball over seven times. He was aggressive in his attempts to get to the rim but made only four of his 10 attempts from the field. The Nets turned the ball over 21 times to only 25 assists. The team recorded only one assist in the entire first quarter and entered … [Read more...] about Minus Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Nets fall to Spurs for third straight loss
NBA: Kyrie Irving erupts for 48 points to push Nets past Jazz

Alex Goodlett/Getty Images/AFP Kyrie Irving dominated the fourth quarter and finished with a season-high 48 points and 11 rebounds to lift the Brooklyn Nets over the Utah Jazz 117-106 Friday night in Salt Lake City. Irving broke a 102-102 tie with a deep shot and hit another in the final minutes to help the Nets snap a four-game losing streak. Irving, who also had six assists and four steals, scored 21 points in the fourth after putting up the same number in the final quarter of Friday’s loss in Phoenix. Brooklyn, which outscored Utah 15-4 in the final 3:18, hadn’t won since Kevin Durant injured his knee against Miami nearly two weeks ago. Kyrie Irving erupts for season-high 48 points in Nets win over Jazz
Everything changes when Kyrie Irving plays like a superstar. Irving exploded for a season-high 48 points in Brooklyn’s 117-106 win against the Utah Jazz on Friday. He is now the Nets’ all-time franchise leader in games with at least 45 points scored. And it was a welcome sight given Irving’s offensive struggles since Durant exited the rotation with a sprained MCL. The Nets’ losing streak in games without Kevin Durant (MCL) ends at four. Irving finished with 30 points in Thursday night’s loss to the Phoenix Suns, but he shot 3-of-16 through the first three quarters. He shot 11-of-27 in Phoenix, 7-of-20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and just 9-of-24 in Brooklyn’s first game without Durant — a loss to the Boston Celtics. Center Nic Claxton continues his campaign for Most Improved Player of the Year. Claxton recorded his fourth straight game with at least 15 points, tallying 20 on the night. He also extended his streak of games with at least three blocks to 11 with four … [Read more...] about Kyrie Irving erupts for season-high 48 points in Nets win over Jazz
Nets lose to conference-worst Pistons despite Kyrie Irving’s 40 points
The Pistons set a trap. The Nets got caught. After a four-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, the Nets dropped their sixth game in the eight they’ve played since Kevin Durant sustained an MCL sprain . They lost to a Detroit Pistons team with the worst record in the Eastern Conference, 130-122. The loss to the 76ers with Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris all healthy was understandable. Losing to the Pistons without star guard Cade Cunningham, starting big man Marvin Bagley III and backup point guard Cory Joseph — at home — was embarrassing. “We were expected to win tonight,” head coach Jacque Vaughn said after the loss. “That’s the goal: Whether it’s a back-to-back, four in five nights, three in four, four in six—it doesn’t matter. You do what’s necessary, whether that’s taking care of your body, the mental part of it, the work that goes on between days off, days off, between games, game day, to get yourself in position to win. … [Read more...] about Nets lose to conference-worst Pistons despite Kyrie Irving’s 40 points
NBA roundup: James Harden, Tyrese Maxey lead 76ers past Nets
James Harden hit two 3-pointers and had a driving layup in the final four minutes against his former Brooklyn teammates and the 76ers stretched their winning streak to six games, outscoring the Nets 137-133 in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 27 points, and Joel Embiid had 26. Harden added 23. Seth Curry had 32 points for Brooklyn. Kyrie Irving had 30 for the Nets, who have lost five of seven without Kevin Durant. The game was the first regular-season matchup between Embiid and former teammate Ben Simmons since a February 2022 trade that sent Simmons to Brooklyn for Harden. The night started with Simmons matched on the defensive end against Embiid, who decided to change from his traditional shot facing the basket and muscle down low. Through the night, there were exchanges of words and stares between the two — including right before the start of the second half. It carried through the rest of the rosters, with six technical fouls called. … [Read more...] about NBA roundup: James Harden, Tyrese Maxey lead 76ers past Nets
Around the NBA: Warriors are league’s biggest disappointment midway through season
It’s hard to imagine the Warriors missing out on the postseason. Just seven months ago, they hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy after defeating the Boston Celtics in six games in the 2022 NBA Finals. It was a memorable coronation. Steph Curry was unanimously voted Finals MVP, and just after the once and current champs silenced the sea of Celtics fans at TD Garden, Klay Thompson ignored the offramp to the high road and blasted Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies at the postgame presser for good measure. Two months into the season, that same team suffered a 12-point loss Tuesday against a shorthanded Suns team, who were without Chris Paul, Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton, and sit a game under .500 — good for the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Not many predicted the defending champs to be hanging around for a play-in spot. They’re only a game ahead of the Trailblazers, who would be on the outside looking in if the season ended at the halfway mark. Championship teams … [Read more...] about Around the NBA: Warriors are league’s biggest disappointment midway through season
Nets ‘tempted’ but averse to riding TJ Warren in Durant’s absence
For TJ Warren, the most frustrating part of it all is the minutes restriction. It’s a necessary precaution — a preservation method for a player fresh on the court after two straight seasons sidelined due to a stress fracture in his left foot. The issue is — as it turns out — Warren is still really good at basketball. He thinks it’s easier to score now than it was before he got hurt. The game is less physical and lends itself to free-flowing scorers. He had 20 off the bench, for example, and played in the Nets’ closing rotation over Ben Simmons in Friday’s loss to the Boston Celtics. He probably could have scored more if he played Kevin Durant’s normal load of 37 minutes. “I feel like I’m doing a lot better than people thought I would be doing this early a month in,” he said after Saturday’s practice. Instead, though, Warren played 28 minutes, which is on the higher end of his minutes restriction because head coach Jacque Vaughn has already denounced the idea of him … [Read more...] about Nets ‘tempted’ but averse to riding TJ Warren in Durant’s absence
Will Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan make the All-Star team for the 2nd year in a row?
DeMar DeRozan’s quadriceps injury isn’t the only thing giving the Chicago Bulls forward a slight uphill battle in making his sixth All-Star team. An odd wrinkle to DeRozan’s annual All-Star campaign is the classification of position he’s forced into. He was sixth among Eastern Conference guards in the latest fan voting results with 835,117. While the 6-foot-6 DeRozan might not fit into the frontcourt grouping with big men such as Nikola Jokić and Joel Embiid, it’s also inarguable that he doesn’t play as a guard. This difficulty to find a grouping for DeRozan reflects the increasingly positionless nature of modern basketball. But it also makes for difficult comparisons of All-Star candidates as he attempts to leapfrog point guards such as the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young, who is 288,228 votes ahead of DeRozan in fifth place. The Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving (3,024,833 votes) and Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell (2,725,558) have a sizable lead for the top two East guard … [Read more...] about Will Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan make the All-Star team for the 2nd year in a row?
