Spain holiday warning as Brit tourists told to put up with miles of ‘smelly rotten sludge’ on family beaches
BRITS heading to Spain this summer have been warned they will have to put up with miles of "smelly rotten sludge" on beaches. Environmentalists say they realise that huge mounds of sea algae washed up by bad weather look and smell awful and are hated by sunbathing tourists. But they are recommending local councils not to remove them if at all possible as it is all part of marine life and conservation and the fight against climate change. The so-called " posidonia" or "seagrass" on Spanish beaches is already being protected in parts of Alicante where the local authority yesterday approved an order to protect it at all costs. And other holiday resorts across Spain are considering delaying the removal of the miles of sludge, even though beach users have to wade through the sludge to get to the sea. The Spanish Institute of Coastal Ecology is recommending delaying the removal of posidonia until the arrival of high season and only then on the busiest of beaches. … [Read more...] about Spain holiday warning as Brit tourists told to put up with miles of ‘smelly rotten sludge’ on family beaches

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON (AP) — The top U.S. military officer challenged the next generation of Army soldiers on Saturday to prepare America's military to fight future wars that may look little like the wars of today. Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, painted a grim picture of a world that is becoming more unstable, with great powers intent on changing the global order. He told graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point that they will bear the responsibility to make sure America is ready. “The world you are being commissioned into has the potential for significant international conflict between great powers. And that potential is increasing, not decreasing,” Milley told the cadets. “Whatever overmatch we, the United States, enjoyed militarily for the last 70 years is closing quickly, and the United States will be, in fact, we already are … [Read more...] about Milley tells West Point cadets technology will transform war
Microplastics: Invisible bane to PH fishermen
SNAPSHOTS OF AN ISLAND | Mambacayao Island is just one of the many fishing communities that consider the Tañon Strait their lifeline. Around 400,000 residents depend on the strait and the nearby Visayan Sea. Apart from fishing, some families also harvest seaweed. (Photo by KRIXIA SUBINGSUBING / Philippine Daily Inquirer) (First of two parts) For decades, the fisherfolk of Mambacayao Island — a small islet that is part of the Bantayan Group of Islands in Northern Cebu — depended on the rich Tañon Strait for their livelihood. John Ortega said that in the past, the small boats that he and other fishermen used would almost capsize from the weight of the 20 kilos of fish that each of them caught daily. They would sell their haul of groupers, mackerel, herring, and even manta rays and baby sharks in the local markets and some they’d whip into sumptuous dishes at home. Now, he said they would be lucky to get two kilos from a whole day out at sea. What are now caught in their nets … [Read more...] about Microplastics: Invisible bane to PH fishermen

Savage piranha attacks leave 4 dead and 20 hurt including lad left with mutilated face
Four beach-goers have been killed in a spree of vicious piranha attacks in Paraguay that left 20 others injured. One of those killed was a 22-year old man, who went missing from his family while on the beach. His family contacted the police , and following a 45-minute search, the man’s body was found to have been badly mauled by the deadly fish with notoriously sharp teeth. The attack occurred while he was swimming in the Paraguay River, south of the capital Asuncion, at Itá Enramada on January 2, Mirror Online reports. Forensic examinations confirmed that the 22-year-old man who was killed had most probably been attacked by piranhas in the water as the beasts targeted his face. It is unusual for piranhas to be so aggressive and yet there have been numerous attacks in the region. A 49-year-old man was also killed in the Paraguay river, in the town of Puerto Rosario, with his body found with bite wounds after he was reported missing. Two other people where killed … [Read more...] about Savage piranha attacks leave 4 dead and 20 hurt including lad left with mutilated face
